So after upgrading from my 5850 to a 7950 games are running pretty sweet. I have my 5850 laying around though and doing nothing, would it be worth just sticking it into my current set up and running them both in crossfire?

My only reasoning for doing this, is it beats it sitting in a cupboard... Does anyone know what sort of performance increase I might have?

That's correct, you cant combine a 7950 + 5850.

With very few exceptions, the first 2 digits have to be the same. You can combine 7950 and 7970, or 5850 and 5870.

In case the diagram isn't clear, it's the 57xx and 67xx. This is because the 67xx series is a rebrand of the 57xx series.

I think that's the only case where it's possible.

It's a real shame. Re-using your old card with your new card to give you that little extra boost, I would have liked to continue using my 5850, it's still a great card.

The newest 7870s (they use the Tahiti GPU instead of the Pitcairn ones) will crossfire with 7950s and 7970s.
