End of the Impreza and STI in the UK from 2013

An ugly bread van doesn't do it for me. Economy is pretty much irrelevant if you can afford to buy a performance car. Not to mention they are not worth the paper they are written on (Modern MPG calculations are done different to those of old).

Why should high performance cars be reserved for those who are seriously well off? Economy is a vitally important factor for many buyers who can't afford to have a daily driver and a weekend car but want the best of both worlds.

An M135i is cheap for what it is, cheap to run, it's basically giving the buyer M3-like performance without the extortionate running costs. There maybe some truth in what you said about MPG calculations but the M135i is not a great example as many reviewers are exceeding BMW's quoted 37mpg easily.

Looks, well they're just subjective so there's no point in arguing that. The 135i looks much nicer in the flesh than it does in the pictures. I personally love the understated and non-aggressive look. It looks like it could be a 118d when in fact it's monstrously fast and capable of upsetting some seriously expensive and fast cars.

This "ugly bread van" might not look as aggresive as the old "one purpose turbo plastic jap crap" (I am joking, I respect a STI/EVO and would love one) but it's fairly subjective and doesn't look that bad in the flesh.

There are other things to a car -the interior and built quality are leagues ahead any evo/sti have been or will ever be.

As for the economy, scott has hit the nail in the head above.

Interiors are not that bad, and they beat most cars in reliability. Hardly crap build quality.

As i quoted earlier fuel economy isnt the reason. The current WRX STI has similar MPG as Focus RS, VXR etc and i would guess the evo wasnt much worse?

If your buying something like a 135i and are worried about the economy you are not going to be able to afford to run it.

I own a Toyota Celica GT4 and if I drive it off boost and don't go above 56 I can squeeze 40mpg but I don't because I want to enjoy the car, not drive it like a Toyota Aygo.

It's not about being able to afford to run it.
If it is possible to get the same performance for less ££££'s then why would you spend any more. The cost of running 300bhp cars has reduced now but the latest Impreza is still living in the 1990's.

At the end of the day I agree, there's no point in having something like an M135i if you're going to drive it like a 116d and fuel economy is a priority. The fact is however you don't hoon your car all the time and if it can also quite easily return 40mpg on a long, easy run then that's clearly advantageous.

Interiors are not that bad

The interiors are shockingly bad for a modern car. My wife's Seat Ibiza has a better quality interior and that cost me 1/3 of the price if an STI. The stereo feels of similar style to the one that came out of either my Turbo 2000 or Blobeye STI. Reliability is also hard to gauge when they sold so few...

no great loss

It's not as if the Impreza was a good looking car.

Modern economy figures are calculated using exactly the same test as previously. What has changed is that some manufacturers have been rather better at optimising their cars for the test than others. Magazines, however, use figures generated from actually driving the cars and the M135i still comes out very well.

I was never a great fan of the 1 Series' styling but after driving various versions of it around recently it has grown on me. Looks quite swish, especially in M135i specification. Still some shabby detailing inside in places but hey ho... The overall package is great.

Slim chance that BMW could bring the M135i xDrive here, which is a mega bit of kit, but it'd be a niche car within a niche so they may eventually decide not to.

Not really, they sold plenty in US and Japan. Uk is a tiny market compared to them.
Had a look inside the WRX STI last friday when i was picking up some parts, was no where near as bad as you are making out.

We obviously have differing views on the interior quality as to me it was plain nasty, compare it to any other mid or premium brand and the quality isn't there. The stereo is cheap, the key feels like something out of a christmas cracker and the rest of the interior is of a simliar type. The only good bits were the drivers and passenger seats.
