I've finally seen the latest trailer. I decided to hold off to see it on the big screen before the Hobbit in IMAX, but for some reason they didn't bother playing it, so I had to make do with my PC.
All I can say is wow. This really gives an entirely different feel and perspective on Superman. I've felt that Superman has been crying out for a movie like this for years. Now probably is the perfect time, and I'm happy the visual skills Snyder has a director paired with the story telling of Nolan and Goyer, can bring Superman back to the world in a new accessible way, that hasn't been explored to the same degree with the character before.
I think one of the problems before with recent incarnations like Superman Returns, is that the world they created around him didn't quite fit with today's audience. It wasn't believable enough, and granted, while we know it is only a comic book film and story, for Superman to work, people need to believe in the character - a man can fly. Superman Returns failed to make this happen, and this was just one of the problems, on a very long list of things wrong with that film. I will agree Superman has always been tricky, because essentially he is like a god amongst comic book heroes, and because of that, he is not a character many people feel they can empathise with. I've personally always found that frustrating, as I've always found him quite accessible in relating to. One of the key elements that made the original Christopher Reeve movie great, was they told the story of a boy growing into a man, not quite fitting in amongst society, and feeling quite alone and not understanding his purpose. Obviously later on throughout, he comes to terms with who is and his purpose. Man of Steel, seems to take this aspect, and delves further into it.
If done right, this could potentially be the best Superman movie of all time. Fingers crossed.
