Anonymous Hacks Westboro Baptist Church Over Threat To Picket Sandy Hook Vigil

To be honest, they're probably doing them a favour. If my son had been killed in a school shooting, and some bible-bashing godbotherers decided to turn up use it as an opportunity to score political brownie points... well, lets just say there'd be another massacre. (/keyboardwarrior)

I'm laughing at my desk here.

Just been reading through their wiki page:

"In May 2011, representatives of the Ku Klux Klan distanced themselves from the church, denouncing them as "hatemongers".[185]"

Comedy gold XD

No i believe it isn't as simple as free speech, you would hate those like the members of the baptist church but you think "yeah its free speech who are we to decide when they should have free speech?" well to the sick and depraved who use this as an excuse should be stripped of this entitlement. Exceptions in a nutshell is what im saying

Are you the person to decide what is acceptable, what is not acceptable, who the 'Sick and Deparved' are? As an experiment perhaps you could nominate someone on the forunms who you trust enough to filter out every message you are not allowed to see. Do you think that person exists, is that what you would want.

If not, then why are you advocating censorship to what the rest of us are allowed to hear, because freedom of speech isn't just about allowing people to say things, it's about allowing people to hear things. If you don't allow people to say things you find ridiculous how do you challenge yourself to best respond to them, how do you know people with these views exisit and work out how to deal with them?

I think the line should be drawn at using freedom of speech just to hurt others.

It's all very well if you've got a message to spread, but don't start spouting hurtful and abusive "speech" just with the intention of getting a reaction.

Edit: Good name btw. Tomas ;)

What is the truth really?. According to research the westboro baptist church has a history for its hate agenda ? anyone claiming "God sent the shooter" in the sandy hook incident needs to be sent into the abyss awaiting execution or termination.

You'd think they would blame something like this on the devil, surely?

How have the WBC not managed to be shot or blown up?

I think they've done more than enough to justify the notion of freedom of speech. They have done more than anyone could to highlight their rather unique brand of idiocy, and their actions merely deride their name further. Does anyone actually take them seriously?

I think Anonymous are correct to stop these vile people. I'm all for freedom of speech, but these are hateful, vile people.

It's similar to Abu Hanza, people were up in arms around getting him out of the country, due to the vile hate he spouts, but are up in arms around this? Double standards all around.

I fail to see why it isn't possible to have freedom of speech but restrict picketing to public areas (away from funerals/vigils for victims).

Effectively, the WBC would be free to protest - just not at funerals/vigils.

That way free speech is protected, but so are victims/family members who wish to express grief.

It's the same as the "trolling memorial pages" thing, we can have a law which prevents people from doing that - while allowing free speech.

IE, if you want to troll somebody who is dead, make your own page - don't force your view onto others who don't want to hear it.

Freedom of speech isn't the same as a freedom to force views onto unwilling recipients.

Freedom of speech to me is a joke, have you seen what this so called amendment has done over the years?! when you have sick depraved people spreading hate and using this as a way to continue is in my opinion a joke and anyone who supports free speech needs to open their eyes and see that its not all plain sailing. I respect your opinion but i just cannot agree with it.

Hate Speech isn't permitted. Nor is speech to incent violence...

There is a boundary, but while free speech is permitted, something's are. It's the same as any 'freedom' you must be both free to do something, but also free from something. Hence, this is a free country, but you can't murder people.

But, yes, hate speech isn't permitted, and if it goes to court, a judge would have to decide whether it is classed as hate speech. Generally speaking however, being disrespectful, is exactly that, simply disrespectful. I'm not saying what they did is right. But nor did I think protesting the march at Wooton Bassett, or wherever it was, was correct either... That said, whilst I feel the protestors may be lacking in a certain moral compass, they're not harming anyone.

In terms of what anonymous have done. It is certainly a good deed, and fantastic. But the original point of slight hypocrisy in the face of free speech, is technically right. That said, I'd probably do the same as them if I had the chance.
