Just moved house - BB Dilemma!

So we moved house on Friday. We'd used Be for the last 3 years and they were amazing. I used to get 10MB/s with no traffic shaping or other restrictions.

In the new house the speed was 1.6MB/s. I have a friend who works for BT and he popped around and re-terminated the cables outside (and said they were wet when he first looked at them) and speed increased to just under 5MB/s.

It would seem that's the best I'll get with Be. They have no fibre offering yet.

My friend said my only option was to go for BT Infinity. I checked the web site and my postcode can get just under 40MB/s - a huge improvement. Then I did some browsing and found out that BT heavily traffic shape, which is not what I want.

I use BB mainly for browsing, gaming and d/l torrents. I can decide whether to keep Be and have half the speed I used to have but d/l what I like when I like, or whether to go for Infinity and have 4 times the speed I used to have for browsing, games and legitimate d/ls, but have torrents d/l at snail's pace.

What to do?

With ADSL2+ BT, they only seem to traffic shape at peak hours..

Never found it a problem. I'd rather the connection always be stable and have a good ping with the trade off of having slower torrents at certain times.

I've not used Fibre, so can't comment on that.

Infinity is only fibre to the exchange not to the house. Normal copper for the local loop.

Thanks for the reply - sort of the way I'm leaning also.

Am on BT Infinity2 myself, and yes, the only traffic shapping I experience is torrenting during peak periods. Other than that, I have had impecible service and connection speeds :)

Too late KIA - just ordered Infinity. I'm sure it'll be fine for my needs and I'll just have to adjust my d/l habits to take account of the shaping.

Thanks to all for your advice :)

Good choice, just under 2yrs on BT Infinity and never really notice traffic shaping but majority of downloads weren't P2P. Personally, I highly recommend BT Infinity. Mulling over the upgrade to Infinity2 or switch to Plusnet unlimited now :)

I am on BT Infinity 2, as long as you know how to set your torrent client up you will never get throttled, I don't..

I don't suffer from any form of shaping.

Client encryption is useless. The downstream shaping isn't as bad as upstream, which is often limited to 1Mb/s.

This.

Switched to Infinity on Monday, setup my client as suggested in the other thread and am yet to experience any sort of throttling in both upload and download.

Im on BT, I cant get a decent Torrent speed in the day but at night it allows it.. But thats when i do my Downloading so all is good
