Don't discount the Swift based on it being FWD. I had one from new for a couple of years as a company car, and it was a brilliant car to chuck around. Insane go kart handling and loads of grip. Pretty dire interior quality though TBH. Good steering feel but not particulalry quick. I had an EP3 Civic at the same time, and whilst the Civic was considerably faster, the Swift felt much better in the twisties (due in part to the naff steering feel of the Civic). The MPG you have quoted is LOLwrong - mine averaged ~34, and that was on a 30 mile daily commute, mainly on A-roads. Speaking of A roads, it's a very fatiguing car to drive at motorway speeds for long periods - high RPM, little sound deadening and bumpy, hard suspension get quite tiresome quite quickly. I imagine similar could be said for the MX5.

I wouldn't really want an MX5 as a daily in grim weather, but if you have bigger balls than me, it might not be a problem for you.

I will be driving on the motor way on a weekly bases, I wouldn't get the 1.8 mx5 only because this is my 2nd car and mpg+insurance will kill me lol

If MPG, low insurance and comfort are important why are you looking at a Roadster and a warm hatch? Have you ran any quotes and researched costs...? because no one on the forum will do that for you. You haven't even told us how many miles you're doing in a year. Help people help you.

Are you serious? I really can't tell.... The 1.8 will be negligibly different on both fronts.

I bought a Mk1 MX5 2 weeks ago & haven't had this much fun driving in decades, The Mk2 is apparently softer more refined but **** that the Mk1 feels like a Go kart on the road & is awesome fun. On the motorway you could sit at 60 - 80 no prob, Mine hums along & the sound of the exhaust is to die for.
I'm 6ft 5 so all I get is "How do you fit in that" but it fits me like a glove & holds me in place when I kick the back out.
Next year I plan on track daying it as well & of course once Spring comes it's Roof off.

In my opinion you could get a Mint Mk1 & end up with the best motor you've ever driven or own, For now anyway. ;)

I will be doing about 5000 miles a year probs, they both are affordable I could afford the 1.8 but the mpg and insurance will cost quite a bit more, I currently own a fiat punto 1.2 8v active sport and recently will have to drive on motorways and the punto couldn't even handle 70mph comfortably so looking at a faster car that I could have fun with while not costing a arm and a leg to run

Have you checked on insurance? There should be almost no difference between the 1.6 and 1.8.

Difference between 30mpg and 40mpg is £20 a month based on your mileage. Is that a lot of money to you?

There is about a £300 difference for me as its only my 2nd car but will cost more in long run too with the mpg as I will be keeping it for about 5-8 years if I can.

Think you have to be over 25 for Classic insurance. :( 1.6 Mk1 should still be cheap enough though. 115Bhp & 950Kg of RWD fun road car & track day car.

There is a lot of Bias in my posts though. :p

Cheers for the correction Janesy B, I don't even think about the number 25 that often it hurts to much. :( + :p

Whenever I tried to get on as a named driver on a classic policy when I was under 25 I was told I could have my own policy but if I wanted to be a named driver I would have to be over 25. This was on a proper classic though.

The fuel at 5000 miles works out at £100 per year extra for the 1.8

If you cant afford £400 per year - 30 quid a month - should you really be considering cars for fun?

Not to mention that the insurance will come down in a year or 2 anyway
