For next hour or two, cheap drink, later on something relatively lively (taking into account we are all married with kids!)
 
Various pubs up the hill in the bailgate are good if you want a cilvilised quiet start. On the high street, Dogma (near the top opposite Walkabout) is pretty nice and not normally too busy.

Late on Home, a large nightclub down a side alley next to Walkabout is the place to go. But get there quite early (2200 ish) or the queues can be quite bad (an hour or more) unless you want to pay for queue jump or VIP entry. If you fancy some decent cocktails/vodka shots Revolution is just opposite Home.

All that said, pretty much anywhere on the high is good this time of year now all the students have gone home for Christmas.
