He gets a decent silent machine vs a decent machine and a worthless silence machine.

It can run windows, wow. So can my silent 9 year old laptop but that doesn't make it better than an i7 system.

Also to spec up a mac mini with 16gb ram and a 256gb ssd goes over £1.2k

An i5 Mac Mini is not worthless.

A £1k spent on £200 monitor, a case and some watercooling doesn't run windows. His existing machine runs windows.

He spent £1k on no performance gain. Did he not?

Explain how buying a Mac Mini will help him have a quiet machine that will play games?

But why would you want to swap between two PCs all the time? PCs CAN be better value if you wish, I built my machine on a budget of £900 and I have a 256GB SSD, 2TB HDD, slot load blu-ray and a graphics card that can handle the very latest games - if I spend another £100 I can add watercooling too. It's far more powerful than any Mac Mini you could ever buy. No one cares what you would have done because it is not your money?

They don't have the same CPUs either, too much to pull apart, can't be bothered.

The point is, he spent £1k and it does nothing more than yesterday.

Nothing, it is just quieter. That's it.

£1k to make it more quiet? When he is saving for a house?

explain how that shell and cables can run any games.

He has a gaming machine, he wants it cooler and quieter and wanted a different/higher refresh rate monitor. How does a Mac Mini achieve this? A lot of money was spent on tarting it up with various fancy cables, but that's his prerogative. I won't argue he's spent a lot to achieve little but I find the whole Mac Mini comparison utterly bewildering.

I'm not discussing purchase justification any more with someone who spent £100(?) on Taylor Swift merch.

Are you losing the plot by digging up old stuff?

He can justify it how he likes, or not at all. I am not going to justify what I spend my money on and neither does he. My 2p (as I said before, and funny how you feel so strongly about this than he does) is that £1k spent on zero performance gain for a gaming PC, a PC which he already has up and running, when he is saving for a house.

FYI, I am not against watercooling, I get it. But in this instance when he has a proper up and running machine, a very fast machine I may add and when he is saving for a house, spending this much money on some tubes and cables seems utterly baffling. I mean just turn up the volume a bit?

It's not tubes and cables, he bought a watercooler, PSU, case and monitor? You're asking me if I'm losing the plot when you suggest he should buy a Mac Mini because it's like 'buy one get one free' when all he wants its a cool and quiet gaming PC? He stated he's fed up of coil whine from his existing PSU, have you any idea how intrusive that is whether you turn up the volume or not?

Anyway it's quite clear that you are never going to understand so it's probably best if we just leave it here.
