Hi all

I've been having a minor little niggle with a 1.8 TDCi 2008 Mondeo. Very well looked after, low mileage etc...

Sometimes (and it's becoming more frequent) when accelerating away from a standstil / low speed the engine briefly feels a little bit "strained" with a small, momentary lack of power. As this is normally at low speed in a low gear, pressing down further on the throttle seems to cure it.

To compare it to something I know, it feels like a misfire on a petrol engine. Or like putting your foot down when off the boost in a large turbo motor.

This morning, it happened when setting off from home, accelerated normally, dipped power, regained normal acceleration. I'd describe it like "kangaroo hopping" or like when you see a new driver / learner stabbing / releasing the throttle.

I'm suspecting injector or fuel line problem? Maybe glow plugs??

Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I've been googling around for this MAF problem and yes it does appear to be common, will see about giving it a clean. Failing that, a trip to a diesel tuner specialist I guess.

Thanks

Have you noticed the performance has dropped off gradually? Mine had without me really noticing and a new MAF made a huge difference.

Just replace the mass flow sensor or like said unplug it.. The engine will tick over like crap but you should tell if its your problem.

Some cars wont run with the maf unplugged but if it does then go a short drive and see if it feels any different. Ideally you'd want to measure the air its reading via obd, but you'd need to know what it should be showing for that to be of any help.

The only definitive way of testing a MAF is with an oscilloscope Though the disconnecting it trick sometimes works (If it runs better disconnected it generally indicates a faulty MAF but some more modern systems will go into limp mode with the MAF disconnected so there is the risk of "False negative" results from this test) OBD scan tools (Especially the cheap E-bay ones) don't generally give a fast enough data-stream to tell you anything really useful about MAF performance

Since the car is "Low Mileage" Blocked/sticking EGR, VVT turbo fins, even inlet manifold are all possibilities

It is worth getting a fault scan to check for fault codes. There may be codes present even though the MIL may not be illuminated but you will need a Ford specific tool. Again the cheap e-bay generic OBD tools will not necessarily show the Ford specific codes
