Crazy to consider a GS2 whilst waiting for nexus stock?

Hey all,

I was going to use my old htc desire whilst waiting for the nexus 4 to come back into stock but my sisters broken hers so I've had to lend it to her.

Would I be daft to buy a GS2 to tie me over whilst waiting for the nexus 4 to have widespread stock? I used one recently and really quite liked it.... and its size too!

Thanks :)

they go for 199 payngo afaik.. so not a bad deal.. if you get a used one for 120-150 then why not.. but then again just keep the desire and wait 2-3 months and i think it will be back in stock :o

Not much point if you're going to be buying a nexus 4 in a few months time. Certainly wouldn't pay anymore than £100 for a phone that will only be used for 1-2 months, if even that.

If your willing to pay for the S2 why not just get the Nexus from O2 since it would cost you roughly the same amount in the long run. Then you get the phone you want right away :)

Because it's stupid to pay more for it when they're available (albeit with difficulty) for far less.

Either buy the GS2 and don't bother with the Nexus, or wait for the Nexus. Having got my Nexus 4 earlier this week, it's a great phone but I'm personally not convinced that it's a particularly significant upgrade over the S2, let alone anything newer. I also briefly tried out the leaked JellyBean ROM on the S2 yesterday and it runs brilliantly.

The only thing going for the Nexus is the price, you remove that from the equation and it's just another high-end phone that people convince themselves they need.

Agree with this! dont let temptation raid your wallet for you.

Can i just say Nexus, your signature rocks.

Really?!!?

I would say that the nexus 4 is a fantastic upgrade over the GS 2:

- s4 quad pro with 2GB, which is noticeable in real world usage (haven't used a N4 myself yet but I can tell the difference between the one S [with S4 chipset dual] and then going by the peoples comments here it sounds to be very snappy/fast)
- audio quality
- build, premium and design (design is subjective)
- nexus device so will get updates fast and be guaranteed to get them
- screen overall (although some might prefer the SAMOLED screen)
- NLED

And for quite a few people, stock android would be a huge advantage.

Camera seems to be more or less the same, although the 1080P recording looks better on the GS 2 in terms of smoothness and light metering.

Yes really. Don't get me wrong, I like it and I'm happy with it, but mostly because of the price. It's certainly a bit more premium than the S2 and it's certainly quicker, but my point is that it's not really all that significant because the S2 wasn't slow, didn't look or feel cheap, had a great display and with CM9 or the leaked JellyBean ROM, was well-featured and performed well too.

I've sold my S2 to my Mum for £140 so it's been a cheap upgrade for me and I'm more than happy with that, but I can't help but wonder how the people that paid CPW/O2 prices for this thing have managed to convince themselves that it was worth every penny. Perhaps if they've upgraded from older phones I can understand, but from an S2, S3 etc, it just doesn't feel like a massive upgrade. Sure, the N4 has all that power, but day-to-day you don't notice much of it.

I would agree, still using my S2 and N4 together (getting S2 ready to give to my Mum). Must say the S2 is still very fast, I don't notice much difference in that department.

Things I do notice is the Screen, a much better screen overall, the colours at time do seem a little washed out and I miss that punch, and you do notice some contrast shift. Audio is so much better, love listening to music on the N4 or watching things. Call quality is the best I have ever seen on any phone, it is so stupidly loud and clear I can't even believe it. Phone feels so much better, mixture of glass and soft touch plastic really works.

Damn it! I'll see who gets the phones in first. I have a feeling the GS2 will come back into stock about a year before the Nexus 4 though!

The thing is - I want a phone I can order now, not one I have to take pot luck on getting when its back on sale.

in real world scenarios of browsing and making calls I can see no difference in howe fast they are and all the rubbish about massive difference is just not true

it is like having 8gb of ram in a pc instead of 16gb or having a 3400 dual core V quadcore in real world you would hardly notice a difference
we have a whole bunch of top smart phones in my household and we all play about with them all the time

and unless you benchmark the phones individually you will see very little difference
number crunchers will - but actual day to day my wife's SG2 still makes the grade being very slick and responsive

You can also get the S3 LTE for £369...... Aaargh which way to turn!

Galaxy S2 appealed for its cheapness and custom roms. I think the i9305 might be a little harder due to the lte?

There's only a couple of good roms for the i9305.

I'm stock just rooted. What do you want from custom roms? Pandorium and Ripper will most likely have it covered.

I notice the 2GB RAM - it keeps more apps in the memory so less cold starts. Other than that it's the same speed wise as the standard S3.

I like TW tbh - doesn't bother me at all in the latest form. JB Domination theme will make it look like stock android.

Thanks for that...

Most people are on about the main interface when they mention disliking touchwiz. Launchers typically fix this problem and a dodgy rom is far from necessary, and this is coming from someone who has CyanogenMod on all his devices.
