Wonder if you can help me guys. My mother in law is after a phone and has a budget of £160. The Lumia 800 is £160 new and sim free.

My question is...is this the best she can do for her money?

I appreciate there will be no more new apps for it but seems a bargain for what she will do with it? ie calls/texts/photos and the occasional email

Any alternatives?

I'd say for the mother in law the Lumia 800 is a great choice - nice design, easy software and great AMOLED screen. £160 is a great price too.

For the price it's a good handset, the only two problems for a casual user are the lack of apps and the battery will struggle to do more than a day at best.

Got my gran a lumia 710 very easy to use and she loves it. I have a lumia 800 and think its a great choice for the money if they are not interested in millions of apps you know it will just work and the battery lasts more than a day with light use.

Thats great cheers guys. Been mulling it over all night and in light of the above I am happy it is the right way forwards. Couldn't really find much better for the price brand new and sim free.

With regards the software side ie media management and backups etc someone told me it's Zune software. Has this now changed and is there newer software for the 800.

Still zune but its quite simple while not my favorite method to use like itunes I would rather it was like android. Its still just drag and drop really just into zune. With regards to photos etc taken on the 800 you can enable it to send it straight to skydrive so you dont have to plug it in to get your photos so that's very handy. And with zune music (xbox music) you can listen to lots of songs for free so really no need for zune except software updates as you can backup over wifi as well.

How are you guys with the lumia finding battery life ? Is it as bad as some people say,as long as it lasts a whole day that would be fine, but if it starts dying in the middle of the afternoon that would be a problem.

I had one and after a couple of cycles on the battery when I first started it, it easily last 20 hours with wifi and bt turned on.

That would be fine..some people are saying they are getting only 7-8 hours with moderate use.

What sort of usage was that for you to get 20 hours ? Was you using 3G ?

I find the battery quite good but I am not a heavy user on calls just texts and gaming and web browsing finding it easily lasts a whole day using 3G.
