Over the past year I have had about 8 different phones
Ranging from I phone, s3 and windows 7.5

Currently using an HTC one s and think it's a cracking phone

I used to love the slickness of windows 7.5 and now the lumia 920 is down to a reasonable price it caught my eye

Anybody who has tried all 3 comment on what you stuck with in the end

Has anybody gone from a lumia back to android or ios?

Games don't look as good a selection on windows at the mo

Where's the quality like shadow gun and vice city

Also still got my nexus 7 so thinking I can always tether to that

Battery life comments would be appreciated as well

Currently getting 4 and half to 5 hours screen time on the HTC one s

I went from an Optimus 2X to a Lumia 800 to an HTC Sensation.

The O2X and Sensation ran CyanogenMod, the Lumia was developer unlocked.

I only did this because I got the Lumia free, on the condition it was my main phone for six months. So even if I didn't like it, I was stick with it, luckily I did like it, but ultimately went back to Android after the six months as I preferred it; more games, more apps, I missed building and sharing CyanogenMod.

Battery was pretty similar on all of them really, I'm a pretty heavy user during the evenings browsing, and everything I use tends to run pretty low.

I've had a couple of Windows phones, an iPhone and lots of Android phones. I always end up going back to Android. It's just too good, so many features and the notifications support, Google Now and far more flexibility than any other platform.

...but it really is horses for courses. That's not gonna be the case for everyone.

Just curiously how do you go through so many phones in a year without it costing you a ton? I mean you can't get them all on contract so must buy them outright then sell them on second hand or recycle after a few months which surely nets you maybe a £100 loss a time? So over 8 phones that's quite a lot plus the original outlay?

My year went something like this...

I went into this year with a Galaxy Nexus. Bought a Nokia Lumia 800 for £195 second hand refurb off eBay in March, decided I didn't like it and sold it to Mazuma for £165. Bought an HTC One X from CPW in April for £480, didn't like it so sold it for £359 (ouch).

Then took out a new contract with 3 in May for an SGS3, got £160 quidco and sold the SGS3 for £430. Bought an HTC 8X in November from Expansys and didn't like it, so sent it back under RMA, over a month later no refund so cutting a long story short had to get the bank to intervene and thus got the full amount back inc. shipping in the end (phew). Then bought a Nexus 4 for £389 earlier this month and sold my GNex for £170.

Anyways TL;DR means I'm £220 up! :D

This year I've gone Android > Windows Phone > Android > iOS.

I hate to say it but Android is still horrendously fragmented/laggy/*insert Android stereotype here that I've found most to be true*. The only phone I'd go with now is a Nexus but we all know how badly Google have messed up that launch.

Windows Phone is dead. It might continue on but it's going to be a niche in the same way Linux on the desktop is. It's a mobile industry after-thought now. Heck I hold out more hope for Blackberry!

Which left me with an iPhone 5. IMO it's the only phone that will just work without any pointless tinkering and is still (despite Android's marketshare) the primary app platform. iOS could do with a much needed features-update but I don't really miss anything from Android too much.

I have used windows 7.5 on the lumia 800 and it is rather nice on the whole, however, I can't describe in words just how much better android is. If you like apps and choice do not get a windows phone, hardly anything on the market compared to android and I mean like nothing, couldn't find like 80% of the stuff I have on my phone or any good alternatives.

Windows is very smooth and fast, however, it isn't lag free, there were times when I do some things and there was a good bit of lag and things like pinch to zoom is not smooth, with most good android phones, pinch to zoom is super smooth. Plus the animations become annoying after having used it for 30+ mins, too slow and too fancy for my liking.

@Fillado

Have you used any of the good android flagship devices like the GS 2, GN, GS 3, one S, note II etc? They are anything but laggy, especially with jellybean.

Who said that you had to tinker with the android phones in order to get them to work? If you get a good android phone, there is no need to tinker at all, many of my friends have decent android phones and they haven't touched any 3rd party apps in terms of widgets, launchers, messing with settings let alone rooting etc. as they aren't that knowledgeable about the stuff and they have found android to be amazing and works easily and very well out of the box (and btw some of them have previously owned iphones)

I think the fact that more and more people are jumping ship from the iphones to the GS 3 and also that the Gs 3 is the best selling phone this year speaks for itself. Your comments are most definitely true before ICS came out though.

I will agree with you on the fragmentation part though, it is beyond terrible.

I've played with all 3 platforms numerous times and prefer Android as it is best all round IMO (usability, features, customizability, price).

@ Fillado, if you spent the same amount on a recent flag ship Android device as you would with an iOS or Windows Phone, I'd say you'd have different opinions.

IMO it's the only phone that will just work without any pointless tinkering

Again,

Neither my mum or dad have done any "pointless tinkering" on their One S and S3 respectively and they work perfectly.

The majority of things i've changed one my One S are purely aesthetic, anything that isn't is just because it is a better alternative, not because it's an essential change.

ended up taking out an s3 contract in feb for 20 pounds a month and with the profits and buying second hand i am still even

I have used all three started with a iPhone 3G which I used for 2 years then had a Desire HD for 6 months, then used the Omnia 7 windows phone for a year before going back to the iPhone 4S. I have and use a Nexus 7 as well as a Ipad 4.

My impressions are Android is still laggy and buggy. I like My Nexus 7 but it annoys me almost every time I use it, here is a list of things that may happen when using my Nexus 7.

Lag
Widget redraws
touchscreen going crazy
App force closes
Wifi losing connectivity

My iPad works almost perfectly as does the iPhone, I can't remember the last time I had to reboot my iPhone or iPad yet I have to reboot the nexus at least once a week because of glitchy software. (I use the Nexus 7 a lot more than the iPad as the missus has dibs on the iPad)

I really like Androids direction and think Google is much more innovative on the software side than Apple at the moment but dislike the day to day experience and usability. Jelly bean has helped but Android still needs a lot of work, maybe even a total rebuild.
My Apple devices may be a bit boring UI wise but everything works really well and is slick. If Google could get its software as bug free as iOS i would probably move back, but in it's current state I prefer iOS instead.

Windows phone I really liked too it worked a lot like iOS but was a bit more personal I liked the live tiles and integration of social networks. I just found the lack of apps at the time a bit limited as well as the pricing on what apps did make it to the market, often 4 5 times more expensive than the iOS version.

"a total rebuild"

They pretty much did with with ICS and there is absolutely no need for a complete rebuild (and it would be such a stupid move too). With my one S and experience with other android phones/tablets, they work flawlessly for me more or less and this is with 85+ apps installed. I have only restarted my one S like 20-25 times since owning it from April and only on like 5-8 of those times was it due to a problem, have only had 2-3 system freezes during that time (which the phone restarted automatically) and ever since the first update in like September I haven't had any more of those system restarts.

Android keeps improving with every update and ever since ICS, it has been spot on for everything and IMO has surpassed iOS in pretty much every area now (except for the apps department compared to iOS and the unified feel throughout) and windows still has a long way to go till it catches up with android and iOS IMO. (basing this mostly on windows 7.5, still have yet to use a windows 8 phone so my opinion could change on windows)

What apps are force closing? And what are you doing when you encounter this lag? From my experience with the nexus 7 it is anything but laggy, yes there are times where it will lag a bit, however, I have also encountered lag on iphones/ipad and windows phones too, just like there is on pretty much any technology equipment with a UI/software.

Regarding the widget redraws? What widgets? Could be problems with the widgets or maybe you have too many widgets so are running out of RAM. Are you using the stock launcher or a 3rd party one like nova?

I haven't followed the nexus 7 thread for a long time now, only for the first 2-3 months after release and don't remember many, if any people mentioning about the screen going crazy. Only problems I can recall was the screen lift and light bleed, sounds to me like your nexus 7 has a hardware problem.

Had numerous android and iphones and had all 3 over the last 18 months. Currently using Lumia 800 and loving it. If you love apps its by no means good but I got it for the live tiles and the way the stock apps do everything I need and quickly. 7.8 is going to make it even better.

I've had an HTC HD7, HTC Desire S and an iPhone 5, all within a few weeks of release and none marketed as budget models.

The HD7 had shocking build quality, the OS was generally alright but it had no apps, didn't have cut and paste for the longest time and Microsoft's promise of regular small updates without the carriers or handset manufacturers needing to approve them turned out to be a colossal lie. Was quite a good indication for how Microsoft would perform in the mobile space in the years to follow.

The Desire S had a load of pre-installed crap by HTC, multiple apps that did the same thing out of the box that couldn't be removed, but the build quality was fairly decent in its defence. Never got an official supported update to ICS despite being only 8 months old when ICS was released. I put the ICS release on that HTC made available on their website and it turned it into a slow piece of crap. Pretty much responsible for putting me off the Android platform, Google should exert more control over what devices they allow to damage their reputation but choose not to for some reason, I guess they'd rather have large numbers to talk about.

I recently helped a friend set up her Samsung Galaxy S3 which from what I gather is meant to be a high-end Android phone, and not much has changed from what I can tell - horrible UI skins, a first-time setup wizard that wanted to update itself halfway through and started from the beginning once it did, other app update requests popping up over the setup wizard, capacitive buttons that turn their backlight off after only a couple of seconds so you can't really tell where the keys are, and a battery cover made of paper. Even for Samsung this was pretty poor, and I have a low standard when it comes to judging Samsung. It very much seems like the product was designed to look good on paper when comparing numbers with competing handsets. I think this is what the Nexus range of devices is meant to combat but I've not used one to be able to find out.

Now I have an iPhone 5, there's nothing that I did on the other platforms that I can't do on this, the build quality is top notch, the OS is designed well, OS updates are seamless (as expected). The apps are consistently more full-featured than on other platforms, and often launch first due to less devices to test for. For an example of this see the BBC apps, Facebook apps etc.

I couldn't be happier, my only regret is that I hadn't gone to iPhone sooner.

My iphone refuses to send/receive data over wifi half the time, the screens lag and lock up whilst swiping, touchscreen doesn't respond and quite frankly its overpriced rubbish imo. Appears it behaves the same way as your nexus.

It's going to happen Jimlad! If google weren't so epicly crap at being a retailer it would have been a done deal already!

after thinking it over at the weekend i am going to stick with android

its come a long way in such a short space of time it can only get better

the only thing i cant stand is all the crap that google collect from your account

now to decide to get a nexus 4 or stick with the htc one s

I run stock android on a non jail broken nexus 7 . I use the inbuilt widgets, calendar YouTube, email, play store, and one third party quora. Standard launcher.
I can only relate my personal experience of android and I get lag, redraws, touchscreen issues etc if other people have a almost perfect experience then maybe the two android devices that i have used have faults. And all the apple ones have been perfect.

Don't get me wrong I think android is ok I just don't like the experience it gives me based on personal usage. The issues are quality of life and don't stop you using the device they are just annoying for me so I prefer WP or iOS for that reason.
