Short version (and there are lots of details if needed)

Basically, working for a tyrant and can;t take it anymore. In fact its making me physically ill with the pressure, demands and long hours.

Everyday seems to be my boss screaming and shouting at me for up to several hours.

He now wants to cancel my Christmas holidays booked off weeks ago (this is the first Christmas I put in for 10 years as need time with my gf before she lives away with her new job which he knows about)

He expects me to start working Sundays in order to "catch up" (have worked the last 3 Saturdays). Granted we are very busy and all behind with our work but currently 4 employees down. He alos is now expecting working from home in an evening and has started making comments about staff should not go home until all their work is finished and if that means midnight, tough **** as he works until after midnight and starts again at 5 next morning.,

I have written out my notice of resignation for tomorrow. Should i resign without having another job to go to? Or come in every day to the screaming and shouting and try and ride it out until I get another job?

On Thursday he started throwing things and smashing things up and we share an office.

It's too hard to get a job right now without having something else lined up. I wouldn't give it up totally, I'd grin and bear it, but have serious words with the boss.

Get another job first

Easy said, but the job is currently making me ill. Working 12+ hour days, texts and phones calls on evenings and weekends, I can hardly sleep unless I down a bottle, I am not sure I can last until I find another job.

I have permanent headaches atm and popping pills all day. My sleep pattern is currently about 3 hours per night.

If it's that bad then just quit. Obviously it's better if you have something else there, but if you're ill over it, there is no point in staying.

Can't you talk to your boss about it, or is he completely unreasonable?

Laugh hysterically at him when he throws a tantrum.

:D My gf said I should walk out of the room and say I will speak with him when he's calmed down.

Really getting to me though. I couldn;t even take a 10 minute lunch break the other day without him ringing me to find out where I was.

Tough one.. friend of mine was in a similar position Ans resigned two weeks ago.. so he is now unemployed and frantically trying to find a job...

Your boss sounds like a lunatic , you definitely need to discuss the situation and it may be that resigning is best..

You say your girlfriend is moving away.. can you look for a job where she is moving to?

You could always go to the doctors and get signed off sick for stress whilst you job hunt !

sounds completely unreasonable

you should walk away when he shouts and say your not going to accept being screamed at but if he wants to talk to you calmly , you will listen.

edit:

^^^^ very good idea about the doctors. he cant fire you for that and will buy you some time

^^^^ ouch, you need to find better ways to cope, and hopefully not in a bottle :)

From what you describe it sounds pretty grim and it could be a toss up whether it is you or your manager who succumbs to the stress that you both seem to be under.

When you say your boss is he the absolute boss or is he a head of a department....? Just trying to get a feel if the organisation has a HR type dept or someone above him who you could talk to.

Are you a member of a trade union...?

Unreasonable. He wants more and more hours/work every day. I now have to have an hour's meeting with him every morning to give him my list of what I plan to do that day and what I see is a priority as he doesn;t trust me to make my own choice of priority. To date he has never changed what I have said is a priority but then spends up to 3 hours on the phone to me adding to things needed to be done that day.

I have kept a log and currently I am agveraging 20 hours per week in phone calls from from him :(

I know it'll be hard looking for a job/attending interviews with the amount of time you put into your current job but get another job before leaving the current one. Obviously if it's making you ill then leave as health comes first.

I'm currently unemployed and t's hard out there at the minute.

is he allowed by law to make you do overtime ?

sounds like you need advice and what he can / and cant "make" you do

Nope he's the absolute boss, MD, 100% shareholder, owner of the company etc.

No course of action above him.

I just keep thinking how much easier and how much of a release it would be once I put my notice in. The hard part is geting another job but at least I will have done something.

I have thought about the doctors but he doesn;t pay sick pay (except ssp), still expects you to answer the phone all day and doesn;t beleive in stress (we had another manager off for 6 months with stress and he sacked him)

In my wife's contract of employment they have it written that they can change her hours and days of work to meet the demands of the business, basically they can tell her on one day what hours she will have to work the following week and that is that.
