Hi, having a problem here with installing some new games via Steam.

I'm trying to install some games onto my HDD, but my steam folder is located in my SSD and already have dota 2 installed in the SSD.

Is there any way of installing the new games onto my HDD without having to transfer my Steam files from the SSD to HDD?

thanks :)

Install Steam on your HDD. Problem solved.
Happened to me a while ago.

hmm, last time i did install a game, it just did it automatically
will try now

Only games that have been converted to the new steam file structure ask you where to install them, At the moment it's about 60% of the games on steam but is increasing all the time,

For now just install it to the SSD then use steammover, That's what I have been doing

Steam should ask you where you want to install the games now.

If you activate through Steam, it will install the game to the steam location.

Can you not activate the game via Steam?

oh yeah, i just found out what you meant.
installed metro 2033 on its own and it gave me an option for selecting folders.
whereas when i did this with a bunch of games, it selected the SSD automatically
thanks!
:D

edit: okkkkkkkkkkk
selected to make a new folder on D: and Steam is still installing the game on my SSD

I see what you mean now :D

Never needed to do it myself.

aaahhh, didn't know steam would let you pick an install directory now :D

Does it only work if you are installing games or would it work if i put steam on SSD, steamapps on HDD and pointed steam to it?

You have to make a folder titled "steam and then it will work.

I also had this problem when the big picture update came about, mine us fine now.

Just had the same problem, ill put the solution I done..:

Right Click Steam Icon in Start Menu,
Settings,
Downloads+Cloud Menu,
Steam Libary Folders,
Add Libary Folder.

Put it on your second HDD, I made a folder called SteamData. Then when you buy a game and install it, it will ask where to :)

do you mean, have two copies of steam installed?
or delete the one on the SSD and install it onto the HDD?

What I meant is uninstall steam from the SSD completely and when you re install it choose the HDD. Once this happens all the games will be installed on HDD.

You've sorted it now anyways :)

BTW there are half a dozen threads on this on these forums with detailed instructions/guides on how to install games on steam over multiple HDDs/SSDs if you search for them.

EDIT: Tho the method crankbro described is a newish feature that makes it a lot easier for most games if you are yet to install them - but not so useful if they are already installed and you don't want to reinstall.

If you activate through Steam, it will install the game to the steam location.

Except when it asks you, like I said.

It's still annoying though, because it doesn't give you the option to move the game between drives, so you still need to use something like SteamMover to do that.

Steammover (or the same feature in GameSaveManager) allow you to change your decision later. Say you install a game to your SSD, and want to put another there- but now you have limited space.

With the new steam feature, you're stuffed. Only option is to delete the already installed game, then install the new one.

With steam mover and GSM, you can change the location games have been installed, after they have been installed, as often as you need.

With those methods, it's easiest to install steam to a hard drive, then just choose the games you want to transfer to the SSD whenever you need to.
