MSI Twin Frozr 7950 Query.

I was just about to ask how many monitors you have running, if you have more than one the memory stays at full speed and the GPU goes to 500mhz, this is "normal" and yep it causes the card to run warm.

Its not a fault ...just a feature, with a single monitor you should be in the 30's at ldle.

Yep. When i disable my second screen my core and memory go to what Wazza said. I dont quite achieve sub 30C but i hit 35C and counting. :) Thanks for all the help guys.

vondanzig, looks like we are in the same boat with our MSI 7950 TF3. Mine idles at 35° which is great but will easily exceed 80° under load, although I have created a custom fan profile to make sure the fans never exceed 55% to make the noise bearable. The auto profile is very agressive for +70°C temperatures, and at stock speed the temperatures should never even exceed 65°C.
I have reapplied the thermal grease at my own expense and I can tell you, don't bother with it as it will make little difference.
My advice, return the card if you can and buy a Gigabyte or Sapphire.

I meant that technically, there are no problems with it. That being said, if the description said that was the case, then in this case an RMA should really be accepted. Whether OcUK can recreate the problem is another matter...

NOTE: For option 1, your warrany is technically voided :)

Normally but ScottiB confirmed it's allowable in these cases.

What would you recommend Rusty?

DSR it - claim your postage back and get a different model. HIS or Gigabyte. Even if you solve the idle temperatures your load temperatures are 20c greater than mine and mine is overclocked!! :)

Awesome, are you meant to ask permission first?

As for DSR, you can't claim postage back

I personally would buy the Giga WF

You can here because they've sent out a faulty card. Myself and others have had postage refunded on these dodgy MSI 7950s. Technically not Overclockers fault of course but the customer shouldn't be out of pocket for returning a faulty product in the 7 (14) day period.

He posted in the thread saying it's OK, no need to ask permission or anything. In fact he was offering to send out TIM to people who didn't have it :).

Hi guys,

So sorry for the lack of clear response. We've had a hell of a time trying to narrow down the issues involved and identify the cause.

firstly, let me just clarify something. The V2 models are based on 7970 PCB/GPU, hence they will run hoter than the V1 models that have been in the channel and in the reviews. That said, the differences reported in this thread are unacceptable, our testing suggests 5C and 3% fan increase in Furmark when V1 & V2 are tested side by side. I've included our data below.

We are 99% sure that the thermal grease application is to blame and will be happy to provide a aid and warranty cover to anyone who wishes to reapply the grease themselves.

Tahiti Pro Tahiti Pro H
Idle 31℃ 35℃
fan duty 30% 30%
FurMark 65℃ 70℃
fan duty 49% 52%
Total board Voltage 225W 260W
Fan Duty: 40℃--30% ; 70℃--50% ; 90℃--100%

Could be but then you're just going to get the same model sent out as a replacement cue starting again.

Easier to go with a DSR return if in the 14 days and then you can choose what to do with your refund.

I was under the impression that as soon as it was returned under DSR, it means you've changed your mind and you won't get postage refunded.

However, if it's an RMA, within the first 28 days, you get a full refund if you so desire, or a card sent from stock?

If they wanted to dig in I'm sure they would be allowed to not return the postage but by sending out a faulty card and then expecting the customer to bear the costs of returning it is not exactly good customer service.

5UB refunded mine and a fair few other guys in this thread:

I think the difference with the MSI cards is that it is known and acknowledged by MSI, OcUK and numerous forum reports that a bad batch or two has snuck through so they're just refunding where being asked to. I didn't even have to ask twice they just agreed :).

Good service IMO.

Mine runs at max temps 59 currently and that's under max load. I haven't used anything like furmark to test further though :)

So it looks like a DSR is on the cards then. Will ring them tomorrow and see what they say. I must note that when i put BF3 on ultra the card did not exceed 70C which i was impressed with. But i get the feeling that it should be running cooler?

i think its right with two screens,it will only affect the idle temps a bit,70c is perfectly fine for bf3,mine gets that hot,it also depends on your ambient temps and case cooling ect
