I don't get the tubes

Indeed. I wouldn't complain about their salary as much if they didn't hold the general public to ransom by striking every time they want a day off

On subject though, the bus is surprisingly quick from Paddington to Victoria. A friend of mine does it every day in rush hour without any problems. I wouldn't suggest a cab unless you like throwing money away.

Victoria > Oxford circus > Paddington should take around 20 minutes. I used to go that way to work because of the long gaps between circle line trains.

8:30? Almost everybody is going to be walking to their offices at that time! :p

I would not recommend driving in the busiest periods, but nothing beats driving when it's quiet. You can get across London in fantastically quick times in enormously more comfortable conditions than the tube. I can be dry, have a heated seat, controlled climate, nobody sneezing on me, Radio 4 etc.

I used to get the Victoria line down from euston daily. If I was running late I'd sometimes end up on the tube platform around 830.

It was never, ever, close to 'deserted'.

Worst I ever had was having 6 trains come past, all rammed to tight people were falling out as the doors opened, at which point I gave up and walked the 4 miles to the office.

The tube is rarely deserted during 0730-1900 Monday to Friday in My experience

Poor them... I get the tube at around half 8 and am in my office at around quarter to 9... Almost always get a seat on both my train and the tube...

And when was the last time you went on a tube and got rained on?:p

I guess it depends on what you class as busy/deserted. Apart from 8-9am and 5-6pm on some lines you can almost always get a seat. I'd much rather put my headphones in, sit down for 20 minutes and relax than swear at all the rubbish drivers, stare at the car in front and concentrate for 20 minutes hoping not to hit any roadworks. I'm guessing it's the usual, experiences vary but there is no way I would drive in london (or take a bus...)

But then I'm also an advocate of more pedestrianised areas and bike areas. If I became Mayor I would set about shutting Oxford street to motorised traffic entirely (except from 10pm-7am) and also shut the roads around Trafaguar square. That day the public sector striked was so peaceful in Trafaguar square!

This I 100% agree on. No way would I drive but then I couldn't drive to Piccadilly anyway as there is no parking at my office.

A bus isn't too bad if you are travelling during the day, I'd never commute my bus though. Eurgh, no way.
