I think I am right in saying that religion is man made and is a way to control people and get them to kill people of different faiths, groups, sexes, and generally oppress people.

Can you believe in God but not be affiliated to a religious cult like the Jewish, Christian or Islamic cults?

Neither of those you mentioned are cults. They don't meet the criteria which involves controlling various aspects of your life.

Jehovah's Witnesses belong to a cult.

Of course you can.

You can also be Christian and belong to no denomination. There's even plenty of non denomination churches for people to discus their person faith with each other and talk about that sort of stuff.

Yes. IIRC you can call yourself Agnostic Deistic (something like that)

PS - how goeth the weight loss?

First few posters seem to be glazing over the meat of the question. Which is a good question, Will god accept you if you chose to not follow man-made faiths.

Personally I dont follow a religion, or believe in a God or anything of that nature. But I live life well and I'm generally kind to others. So surely that is reason enough to find my way to "heaven" if in deed when I die I turn out to be wrong and there is a deity of sorts.

You can believe whatever you like. Whether God lets you into the private after party in the sky because you followed one man-made religion or another is not something that you can find out for a fact.

I believe that's called being spiritual. Believing in a higher power but not sticking to a scripture or set of rules. IMO this is how most religious people are nowadays anyway, a lot of people no longer go to church and they pick and choose which parts of their scripture to believe in. It's not hard to take it a step further and believe in nothing but a higher power. I think it's called being a hippie.

Religion is supposed to help people by making them behave, act kindly towards each other, and have hope. Men through history have twisted religion to control people and start wars in the name of God.

Personally, in this age of information and freedom, I believe religion no longer has a need or place and the time of man to use it as tool to control needs to end: but that's a different argument.

Yeh I had to spice the topic up so people would post.

It's funny that man has created these religious institutions. it seems that all they do is alienate and segregate people into opposing groups that causes hatred and violence throughout history.

Isn't God the same one for the big three religions? Why don't religions be abolished and we all just get along?

Who would abolish them? The people who run the institutions, who believe wholeheartedly, and their lives and power are based on them? Are you being deliberately facetious?

Abolish religion. What would that achieve, other than forcing your believes on to billions.

Banning religion would achieve nothing, human nature is the problem not religion.
Plent of acts and rally cries, ave not used religion as the seed.
WMD is a recent example of control, not based on religion.

You have many groups from atheists to green peace and everyone I between which try to force their believes onto others, usually in a far more forceful way than religion.

Its human nature to want to hurt the other guy it would seem. If it wasnt over religion, it would be over land, if not land it would be over resources. We'd always find a reason to want to hurt each other. We as a race suck the big one.
