My cousin got some extra bits for his PC for Christmas and I've put it together for him today.

He already had a Gigabyte GA-MA74GMT-S2 740G motherboard, and for Christmas, they bought him.

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 965 Black Edition "125W Edition" 3.40GHz
TeamGroup Elite 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 PC3-12800C11 1600MHz

And I gave him my old GTX 460 graphics card.

But the fan on the CPU seems to be just going insane, sometimes revs up and down, but it is really loud.
I checked in the bios and it says that the CPU temp is 45 oC.

Have I done something wrong here? I didn't apply any heat paste, because the heatsink already had some on already.

Add a rear case fan if you can otherwise the cpu fan is just using the same air over and over, if there was paste on the heatsink you don't need to replace it. If you have some decent paste to hand it wouldn't hurt though.

Yep it's enabled.

I installed Speedfan to check the temperatures, everything is 40-45 oC.
But 1 reading, called "Temp 3" is 83 oC.

I had the same problem after moving from a q6600 to a phenom 2 x4 955. The fan would only go mad under load though, when gaming for example. It had never happened before, but it was my dads pc prior and he didnt use it for anything other than an every day desktop pc.

I installed a 120mm intake fan and opted for an aftermarket cooler. Thermalright true spirit 120. This reduced the cpu fan noise and dropped temperature by about 10 degrees at idle and under load.

Checked everything in the bios, reset to optimized defaults then checked again.

The CPU doesn't even feel hot, you can quite easily keep your hand on the heatsink.
Just wish I knew what that "Temp 3" reading was.

Unfortunately the case doesn't have any additional fans.

Tried putting on the old fan, and it ran a lot quieter.
But he took it home, now he's saying it's getting very hot and turning off...

Can anyone recommend a fan?

I've got the sam problem.. all new parts (asrock 990fx eXtrame 3, AMD 6100 fx, new case whit one front and one on the back 12 fans, just format and instal windows 7... all enabled quiet functions in bios... and still my fans freek out when I play or doing many things on the same time. My CPU fans show about 2400rpm and temp 39oC now but when I just turn on some game going up to 6399 RPM and temps going up to 52oC.. I try change speed on ASROCK Extreme Tuning utility but nothing change :/

id add some case fans too, i bet its not got any air getting to the heatsink

I agree. GTX 460 is not a cool GPU and no case cooling fans means little or no case air exchange. Result is GPU, CPU and everything else making heat cause case to heat up. CPU & GPU exhuast hot air into case, case heats up, CPU keeps trying to cool but hot air means CPU gets hotter, fan goes crazy trying to move more air through CPU cooler but the air going in is hot so it can't cool, etc.

You need at least 1 intake and 2 intake fans is better, and a exhaust fan behind or above CPU. Cooling only works if the cooler (CPU and/or GPU) have cool air going to their intakes.

Ignore temp 3, its a dead sensor.

I had mine reading just shy of 100'c when I used one of those boards as a stop gap while I waited for an RMA replacement.

Well I found an old case fan I bought for my PC (didn't have room to fit it), so I'm going to try to fit that later.

But I think the problem might be the actual case, I've been upgrading their machine for a few years now, but the case has never been replaced, which is pretty basic.

Can anyone recommend a 1/2 decent case for under £50.

Case is a Fujitsu Seimans, they've had it for years, I'm just kinda been upgrading around it.

I whacked on a 120mm fan I had spare onto the side of the case, where there was some sort of grill. I've got it blowing out at the moment.
I'm running Prime95 and watching temps with SpeedFan, the core's hitting 65-68oC on test at the moment. CPU fans making a fair bit of racket.

There is room at the back of the machine for another fan, think it's meant for an 80mm, don't have a ruler handy.
There's also a PCI slot free underneath the graphics cards, so I could fit some kind of exhaust in there.

Just unsure how to proceed, should I get 2 more fans, using the 1 at the back as an intake. Or should I just make them bite the bullet and get a new case.

I knew there was a reason I never built PC's for family and friends :(
