Just something that came to mind while I was driving into work today.

What would happen if Steam died? I have put a lot of money into my digital games collection.....If Steam just packed up and left what would happen to our games!?

They belong to Steam/Valve and your purchases are infact 'rented'. I has been said various times before though that they will try their best to keep your collection available to you.

Don't worry though, Steam is a huge money maker. I doubt there is anyway they can really lose money, the publishers/developers are the only ones with something to lose.

Assuming they were liquidity and there was no cash left to refund customers then we would have to repurchase our games again elsewhere.

However, Steam offline mode should allow you to play your games without Steam being available so I'd keep a backup of all your games locally.

There was a thread about this not even a week ago (or very recently at least).

I'm sure. To be honest their is always a post close to anything you put on the net somewhere but I wasn't sure anyone on OCUK might be as paranoid as me so I skipped the searching for previous threads out on this occasion - my apologies

They have to say that though else nobody would use the service if they had no confidence in it.

They've said that there's a system already in place that will mean everyone's games will still be available should Steam or Valve cease to operate. Good enough for me.

With their business model, I can't see either going anywhere as long as there are PC games to sell.

If steam died I would logon to overclockers and use the search function to find the other 1000 threads on this topic to find a solution

someone needs to take them to court or a law to be passed that makes the games not rented before you can moan about not being able to access your games if steam went bust.

i swear we already have a thread about this made a week ago

i reckon if steam died, wed all lose access to the games there and valve would be forced into making HL3 to make some cash back then in the future they would launch a service called Vapour and we'd all be addicted to the sales there too!

Indeed. And as I have said many times before, it's astonishing, the hubris with which people are willing to let a single entity be the sole gatekeeper to their games collection, to the point where some people won't even buy games unless they're on Steam! WTF?!

The conversation is basically this:

"OK I might buy all my games from you, but what if you go under/get bought/anything else?"

"It's OK, I solemnly promise you'll still have access to your games."

"Oh, that's alright then!"

I will never, ever understand this. I buy my games from as many different sources as possible.
