Do you think the labour would be there if we were to have everything open 24 hours?

Supermarkets, shopping centres etc etc.

Just how awesome would it be if everything was just open 24/7 flat out. 3am you need something from Meadowhall, not a problem, it's all open!

You wouldn't need the same amount of people manning the shops as you have during the daytime.

This is all under the assumption it's worth it for the business though.

Would be pretty good though.

I disagree it may be good for you but it wouldn't be good for the people who had to work the shifts.

Did you know that you are more likely to die earlier and have medical problems working a night shift?

Can't imagine it makes business sense really. Regardless of there being less staff, there still needs to be enough to provide some security for the store and the employees. So with their wages plus energy bills, I doubt many shops would make a profit during the small hours.

It wouldn't make sense for most businesses because people don't tend to need things at 3am.

It works for supermarkets a) because of how they generate their profits and b) because they stock shelves during the night so are incurring a lot of fixed-ish costs 24/7 anyway.

Supermarkets went 24hrs because they realised they have the staff stocking shelves, with the lights on anyway.

Might aswell try to get some £ while thats happening.

The business isn't there because we are used to an environment where things are shut over night.

If it was the norm for things to be open all night then there would be the trade to keep things open. The service industry could easily stay fully manned 24x7 if providing services to the whole globe. I expect you could justify (ignoring the hurdle of having to pay people) the financial services areas in London being open 24x7, which would then mean all services that get used by those people (shops, restaurants, etc) would be able to open all the time.

We are programmed into a 9-5 culture.

That said, I wouldn't want to live in a place where everything was open all the time. You wouldn't be able to get away from things.

You seem to be forgetting that all humans need sleep and the best time to do that is at night when there is no natural light.

Don't think you can just blame it on a 9-5 culture. Especially as most out of town retail stores open til 8.

This is the most stupid argument that comes up every time.
What is special about retail staff? Infant many shops are open or at least working 24/7.
Pretty much every other industry to some disagree works 24/7. How do you think your parcels are delivered in such a short time, or how things are. Manufactured, or how haulage companies work, or how hospitals work. All are 24/7 we are a 24/7 society and shift/night workers get rewarded with extra pay.

Most shops would not open 24/7 anyway, it's not profitable. Not all places would get a license from council to open 24/7 due to noise.
However they should be free to open 24/7 if they wish and don't disturb residential areas.

I've often fantasized about this too.

Although every wal-mart I've seen is 24/7 and they sell everything so if you happen to need a jet ski battery at 3AM you're covered.

Glaucus you have misunderstood my post. I wasn't saying retail staff shouldn't have to work late nights, I was pointing out that everyone else (ergo the customers of the businesses) tends to need sleep and getting that sleep at night is a sensible thing to do.

If a shop has no customers, or so few they it's costing them money to remain open then why would they do it?

The customers aren't sleeping, there's millions of us who work nights. 4.1 million, 17% of the employed do shift work.

As I said many wouldn't open 24/7, But those who want to, should be allowed, currently they are not, due to Sunday trading laws.

There are plenty of couples who both need to work to pay the bills yet as they have children one parent this is a problem due to child care. One could work nights.
There would be no issue in filling the vacancies if all shops were open 24/7.

Don't want to work nights? Well work days instead then.

I would love it if shops never closed.

I really wanted a 3.5mm to 2x 3.5mm adapter and two SATA cables on Christmas Day.

Why were you shut, Maplin? WHYYYYY???

But you're at work, i.e not in a position to go shopping.

There are plenty of late night garages and supermarkets to cover your pasty and a pint of milk requirements for that.

Regardless of the hours someone works, it's not often they go out clothes or furniture shopping on their way to work. What makes you think that night workers would suddenly all flock to Argos on their lunch breaks to get a TV Stand if they were open 24 hours a day?

I would love it if shops never closed.

I would love it if Kim Kardashian turned up at my house claiming she wanted to be my sex slave.

based on what? people trying to have a regular life with friends instead of getting enough sleep...

Dont even try to tell me theres some magical force that makes people die earlier if they sleep during the day

you what would be good, if Ikea was open 24/7 including the restaurant. It's always unbearably busy when I go there.

And if they had TVs and stuff you could watch so you could really test out the furniture. Sit and watch TV for a few hours on the sofas.
