Being open 24 hours

Aspects of that industry do run 24/7 - it doesn't necessarily follow that shops, restaurants stay open just because some IT guys are working or some people are covering for guys in Asia, the US etc...

I meant if the whole sector stayed open, rather than just the few people that do now. If there was as many people working in the city over night as there was during the day then all the services that serve them could be fully open 24x7 too.

Its cheaper to just follow the sun and have 3 offices in 3 timezones though.

At 4am they're usually busy re-stocking shelves anyway...

I guess that's the point.

They normally use that time to re-stock, but any 24 hours will just keep a skeleton staff on the til to let customer make purchases. You can be sure that all the deli counters will be shut, the pharmacy is shut. The store isn't staffed do much sale at those hours.

We would probably have no reason to have any unemployment if it was viable.

I would work any amount of hours at anytime and any day just to have a permanent job. I have been temping since being made redundant a few months back. :(

Working the odd night shift means that I can go to the bank or post office during normal working hours. The 9-5 Monday to Friday working of a lot of essential services is hugely irritating.

I don't think most of the general public think about the implications of a 24/7 culture. Personally I'd rather go back in time when Sundays were a real day off for everyone. I work shifts have done for 20 years but still find it sad that Sundays are just now like every other day.

based on what? people trying to have a regular life with friends instead of getting enough sleep...

Dont even try to tell me theres some magical force that makes people die earlier if they sleep during the day

http://www.pafo.co.uk/magazine/medi...t-work-can-cause-host-of-health-problems.html

One very light example, google the health effects of night shift working for much more info. This is why people that work night shifts are entitled to have free, regular medical checks, and why night workers hours are calculated differently (although if I am honest the end result is almost the same as working time for non night shift workers).

Post and run unfortunately, need some sleep before work tomorrow :(

Couldn't agree more... Rather work "unsociable hours" than have no job/temp-job

Sunday Trading Laws... Such a backwards country down South ;) :p

Glaucus - I thought you were getting a new keyboard. If you have, I would send it back because some of your posts are as illegible as they were a few months back :p
