Ok, I know there's a New Year's Resolutions thread, so feel free to shoot/spank/ban me depending on your preference.

That said, I thought it worthwhile to create a thread specifically for those of us giving up smoking this year. Community support and all that, might help people stay strong?

Anyway. I don't normally smoke at home because the other half detests it, but get through 10-15 a day at work. Haven't smoked anything since the Winter Solstice - going cold turkey and just reminding myself how ludicrously bad for my health it is. Seems to be working so far :)

Yeah that's what I did just kept reminding myself how bad it is. The trick is to try and stay away from other smokers for the first wee while as a few will want to get you back on them with constant offers of fags.

Dont despair though if you are in that situation and you get through it you start to feel sorry for these people.

I put the money in a jar for a while and its amazing what a 20 a day habit costs.

Dont listen to others saying once a smoker always a smoker. I felt this way for maybe the first year or two but nearly six years on now and I hate it. I feel much better for it and would never go back.

I'm in.

Got an NHS support pack coming. Going to buy a e-cig vapor stick today and have pledged to those close to me the 2013 will be the year.

Will favuorite this thread and get involved, we can do it people!

A few friends at work have given up over time.
As an observer my comments would be :

Don't try to be a hero and go cold turkey if it doesn't suit you, use every means you can to break the habit be that patches or sweets or whatever.

You need to try really hard to avoid the situations where you would smoke heavily/regularly; for a while. Eg the pub was a nightmare for the ex-smokers if we went for a pint at lunchtime (pre ban obviously). So if work is when you smoke most I assume thats breaks / lunch, so plan how your going to handle that, are you going to go somewhere else or how are you going to avoid that natural reach for the fags moment if your not changing anything else?

Try to set yourself reward goals, maybe an ipad or a holiday or promise the g/f a meal out after a week, or something, smaller regular goals then make some longer term ones to help you stay off the fags. Unless your a bit generous on your rewards then tehy will practically be self funding by the cash your saving on smoking.

Remember you won't feel the full picture of health the day after you give up, it takes some time for the body to start mending to a point you will see the benefit, but it will come.

I'm in, having had a nasty cough for last 2 weeks and coughing up my lungs I really need to quit. Already have an e-cig to try and weeen myself off it. 34 years old, my girlfriend still smokes so it might be harder but she needs to quit too really hopefully I'll help her off it too

Have given up for 6 months in the past, completely cold turkey - so I know I can do it. Of course, my best friend's stag do (with me as the organiser) kinda put paid to that - unfortunately in nicotine terms what happened on the stag do didn't stay on the stag do. I went into the weekend with the intent of giving up again immediately after, but it didn't work out that way. Lesson learned!

10 days in and have still had very little in the way of craving. Back to work the day after tomorrow though, that'll be the real test...

I gave up about 4 years ago and don't even think about wanting one any more, so stick with it.

I would REALLY advise against this - it will be a constant reminder of what you are missing and simply swapping one addition for another - the equivalent of a junkie still injecting himself only with less harmful chems, but still has the habit.

im right up for this, can i join in in ~5-6 months please as ive got a backlog to get through...

20 years of on and off smoking I gave up in the summer - I'm now well and truly over it, cold turkey jobbie - it wasn't so bad - people talk it up how hard it is - they'll make you think it's like getting off crack. If you REALLY want to give up - you'll give up right there and then and deal with it.

I'm glad I did it but god damn I've now got to shift about half a stone of extra weight I've "acquired" since giving up. I think I've been comfort eating. :o

rather than waiting for a new year to give up smoking, how about thinking about the damage you are doing to your health, wallet and those around you.

Quit today?

I'll do it tomorrow attitude will always end in failure. The first step in becoming a non smoking is actually wanting to give up in the first place.
