Is it just me hating the horrible smoking related disease publicity

I really dislike the way smokers are made out to be reckless individuals gambling with their lives. Alcohol or fast food isn't branded the same way *shrug*

The only people it offends are non-smokers, its a case of it "wont happen to me" with actual smokers.

I think the difference is that you can eat fast food and drink alcohol in a moderate and healthy way (both for you and those around you)....you cannot do that with smoking. It is bad for you (and those around you) whatever your smoking habits are.

IMO the main differences are just timing (smoking was know issue faster) and of volume, a little alcohol and fast food are fine.

Smoking was made out as a good thing, old adverts suggesting meeting husband at the door with a cig to help him relax etc. Then it became apparent how bad it actually was and que the big push on smoking.

Alcohol was been around as long but the heavy drinking of a significant proportion has been a relatively recent thing. Drunks always existed but most people couldn't afford to drink excessively. Hence some of the recent push to increase the cost of alcohol to make it less accessible to get drunk cheap.

Fast food issues are a lot more informed than they were 20 years ago. Just like smoking I believe they are fighting a losing battle, but food in general is the issue, one big mac a month isn't going to kill anyone, but if it becomes your standard diet then thats the issue. I think over time you will see more tax on unhealthy foods and hopefully subsidies given to healthy ones but you only have to look at the outcry over the "pasty tax" to see the publics reaction to any rise on tax on "normal" food

Like people who claim that they don't know that fast food is bad for you, us smokers know that its really bad for you. It causes cancer, smells bad, stains teeth, stains skins, reduces elasticity in the skin which causes premature ageing etc etc.

I just can't fathom how this will make an iota of difference when you consider that every pack of cigarettes has actual real world images of disgusting smoking related deseases rather than stupid "tumor on a cigarette" imagery.

Also, Summer Heights High is brilliant.

Frankly I do not believe that the government are particularly worried about the health of the general public, if they were THAT bothered then they would have banned smoking and maybe alcohol as well years ago. They know what it does to people yet they still continue to sell them and increase taxes, I think that the points about it being very difficult to enforce a ban are true but also the people who sit around all day claiming benefits are the main population that smoke so they are paying back some of their taxes by spending £30 a week on cigarettes.

Happily I don't watch broadcast TV propaganda so I do not get subjected to this rubbish. Solution, turn of the TV, it's a waste of your life anyway.

AND THE AWARD FOR THE HIGHEST HORSE GOES TO ...................

but also the people who sit around all day claiming benefits are the main population that smoke

Sauce? tomato or brown will do?

I think the adverts are great. The best way to ensure young ones avoid smoking is to expose them to this sort of media.
I think also on a lesser scale it may help parent smokers who get asked difficult questions to quit.

I'm happy to see the adverts go off-air once cigarettes are £20 a pack - £1 each.
I'm an ex-smoker, stopped around 7 years ago and have never been tempted to restart.
All these excuses about starting again. It's called being weak-willed.
All this "I could stop if I wanted to". No, you couldn't.

It amazes me when it's proof smoking kills you yet people carry on. "All smokers are stupid" - yup, I agree.
If your stupid enough to keep on doing something that is proven to do you harm - if the cap fits.

So, a little alcohol is not a health problem, but a little smoking is?:rolleyes:

I'm sorry, but I enjoy smoking a cigarette or cigar once every now and then, and it is sad to see the stigma on every smoker that "omg your so weak to smoke, you are doing it to look cool etc"

Gotta be honest I enjoy a little nicotine rush. Unless I'm drinking, I only have a rollup a day to give me a buzz, and I don't see a huge problem with that. I enjoy smoking, so shoot me.

As a non-smoker, what I don't understand is, if you gave up for over a year, what made you start up again? By then there is no chemical addiction or anything like that, surely?

An addiction doesn't have to be chemical.

One day over eating/incorrect eating will be classed an addiction and once it is recognized as such the government will start offering obese people the same amount of help as they offer smokers.

(Slight deviation from OP sorry but I felt like I had to say it)

It's a horrible advert but not as disgusting or selfish as the people who make me breathe in their second hand smoke. Nothing worse than the stale smoke smell that clings to smokers clothes, that alone should be enough to make them stop.

That is about the truth of it....small amounts of alcohol can have health benefits...smoking in any capacity can not.

But many people clearly don't drink alcohol in safe quantities (including me!).

The focus on smoking in this regard is disproportional when you think of the other things they could aim such warnings at.
