Hi there was was hoping an expert could cast their eye over this system I have put together and tell me what they think / could suggest. (any compatibility issues? )

I am worried that any aftermarket cpu cooler i try will block the closest ram slot , as shown in this bundle image :

LINK

I know the simplest way to prevent this is take the fan off, but i wanted to avoid impeding the capabilities of the cooler. I could always, use a water cooled block however, but as i haven't had any experience with these i am a bit apprehensive. ( are there any air coolers that wont block the slot? )

My requirements for this build is to eventually have 2x 690's ...(just because i can) no other reason, in doing this however, I have released i don't need a MB with 4x PCI-E slots, i only need the two? (or am i completely wrong on this ) even tho its considered quad sli for the 2x 690's...its still only 2 slots right ?

Are there any other alternative MB's anyone can suggest and why ?

Any other comments would be appreciated...budget is £2200 (2500 MAX)

Cheers

Dominic

This is going to be a great build! Would love to see the pictures when its complete!

I also have the sabertooth motherboard and its a great board with great features.

Use the H80i or H100i if you don't feel comfortable doing a custom water loop. At £100 for the H100i it's more cash to pay out than a decent air cooler but it will remove your RAM heatspreader woes ;)

I presume you're on Multi-monitors, or thats big time overkill, hehe!

Why not save a few quid and go for GTX680's or 670's in Tri-SLI. In most reviews, they are pretty close to the 690's in SLi and for £1600, thats not the best bang for buck. If it's because you can, go for it! :D

Good luck, have fun!

There is no need for ram with the big heatsinks on as many 1.5V sets don't these days as tiny heatsinks are fine.

Don't be fooled into thinking cool looking ram is better :p.

Provided the ram is rared for 1600mhz timings make no real world differences. Imo save your dosh and get cheaper ram with a less snazzy heatsink and spend your cash elsewhere.

If you are planning on such a high end build then I would be looking at 2000mhz+ rated ram in the first place rather than 1600mhz ram. I run my ram at 1600mhz in my 2009 i5 build :p.

@ Watlinguk , I shall definitely post some piccy's once i start the build so keep ur eyes pealed, and thanks for the heads up on the board :)

@ honosuseri, I was thinking the NZXT KrakenX60, heard good things about. But the two you've suggested look good too i shall check them out.

@DougF1 Yer duel monitors.. :) some of my friends are saying i should just get 680's....and im like....But But But....its a 690 lol...for the first time, i have the opportunity to buy the "BEST" card on the market..and it would be nice to have that feeling just once..before the next Generation come out lol

@ OpenToSuggestions Ram is one of the things im most unsure about...timings, speeds all that jazz.... id prefer to get 32gb off the bat, can u suggest any other RAM?
I find it hard to find 4x8 sticks at high clock speeds

1200W is OTT, but whatever. I would personally go for a Seasonic Platinum, or the Seasonic X-1250, which I believe is roughly the same price. Also, make sure your case can take those gigantic PSUs, they are very long. For the motherboard, I'd probably go with the Z77X-UP4, or UP5, but hey, Sabertooth isn't a bad choice.

Also, I would say to come back to your senses and abandon the 690 SLI, unless you are planning triple screen gaming.

At this point, a single 690 is a waste of money. By the time you require the power it could deliver, new cards will be out that deliver that sort of power for a fraction of the price.

It'd make much more sense to get something more cost effective like a 7950, since you're playing games on a single screen a single 7950 will be more than enough.

If you were to go for multiple screens (well three), 690s or even 680s aren't great anyway, a couple of 7950s will give you more performance than a GTX690 across 3 screens at half the price.

It just doesn't make sense buying in to nVidia at the moment.

@spoffle i understand your point about new cards being more powerful at a fraction of the price...but from what ive seen of new tech break throughs recently, gfx cards will soon be requiring a whole new slot interface any way, which means a whole new MB...so its swings and round about's, Upgrade to best now..pay the price..or get the best later..still pay the price..

As for Ati (no flame battles here) but ... I require Nvidia cards not just for gaming but for 3D rendering technologies and capabilities that Ati just don't offer.

This isn't actually true, I think you may be getting confused with PCI-E 3.0.

What I actually meant about the power though is that you will simply never get your monies' worth going for a GTX690. By the time there are games out that require the power that a 690 offers, new cards will have been out a while already.

Think about it this way, it's like buying food in bulk, except by that your food keeps going bad before you've even gotten half way through it, so you've got to throw it away.

A single 690 would be a waste, 2 690s would just be a ridiculous waste.

It's not about paying the price, and arguably the 690 isn't the "best" anyway. You simply won't make use of it now. What I was actually proposing or suggesting is that buy a lesser card now, not the top end most expensive, and then when you need more power, do the same, a new card that's not the top end or most expensive. Otherwise you're just throwing your money away for no benefit.

As for AMD (no flame battles here) but ... I require Nvidia cards not just for gaming but for 3D rendering technologies and capabilities that AMD just don't offer.

This just adds to my point, the GTX 6 series are poor for that sort of stuff, so 690s really aren't what you want to invest in. If you want CUDA performance, then you'd be better off going for GTX 5 series cards because the 6 series have been cut down in CUDA performance.

Which would good CUDA performance at the expense of games performance because the GTX 6 series are really quite poor at it, nVidia stripped out a lot from the GTX 6 chips that provided the CUDA performance to make the chips more efficient for games.

The GTX670 is the most sensible nVidia card to get, but for games, a 7950 is better, and the 670s just aren't good for CUDA.

So it's a bit of a lose lose situation you're in.

In all honesty RAM over 1600mhz makes such little odds on the 1155 socket. You might well be better off with an X79 setup to be fair. To use that much RAM (32GB you need a Pro OS). I'll try and make a more "sensible" spec

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3930K 3.20GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £449.99
2 x Gigabyte ATi Radeon HD 7950 Windforce 3X 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with FREE FARCRY3, Hitman Absolution, Sleeping Dogs & 20% off MOH Warfighter PC Games £239.99 (£479.98)
1 x Samsung 256GB SSD 840 PRO SATA 6Gb/s Basic - (MZ-7PD256BW) £209.99
1 x Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £179.99
1 x Seasonic X-Series 850w '80 Plus Gold' Modular Power Supply £149.99
1 x Corsair Hydro H100i High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket 1155 / 1156 / 1366 / 2011 / AM2 / AM3 / FM1 / FM2) £99.98
2 x Patriot Viper "Black Mamba" Generation 3 16GB (2x8GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Dual Channel Kit (PV316G213C1K) £89.99 (£179.98)
Total : £1,762.49 (includes shipping : £10.50).

This RAM can be overclocked and the extra speed is worthwhile on this socket. The RAM isn't really that tall so the H100i isnt really necessary a Noctua D-14 would be a good air cooler. I don't know what software you are using, you could swap the 7950s to 670s if you really want CUDA support

@ spoffle so which gtx 5 series would you say are best for cuda support, just curious to know.

Thanks for the list of parts ill take a gander when ive got time..and thnkx to everyone for helping so far.

In general, if you are going for air cooling then low profile RAM such as
Corsair Low Profile, or G-Skill Ares will help prevent problems fitting the RAM under the CPU cooler.

Used G-Skill ARES under the Be-quiet dark rock pro 2 cooler inside an NZXT 810.

A GTX580 would be a lot more suitable for CUDA work, better performance but will be lacking in game performance.
