Bulking body up

Sit-ups are not great because of the strain they put on the lower back, the use of hip flexors for the movement and the fact that they aren't even the best exercise for the abs and core.

And no, the 'defined' lookis simply a question of body fat (or lack of it), rather than their specific size. They are just easy to do (because of the involvement of hip flexors) and make people feel like they're doing something as they're dynamic (I.e. involve movement).

A much better workout for the core muscles is the plank, body saw, roll outs using a ball/barbell. However, watching somebody plank for 30s or even three minutes doesn't make a great exercise video, whereas having a hardbody lie down and grunt/count with each one makes much more compelling viewing.

The OP really just wants to stop eating rubbish and do a simple weights routine. Not bicep curls or tricep kickbacks, but squats and other compound lifts with plenty of core work. It really is that simple. In fact it's even simpler, as given the right diet he doesn't even need the workout (yes, I feel dirty for saying that).

Well you still need to work them... Plenty of skinny people without abs... :)

The other point I guess is that apart from planks and sit ups you need equipment for a lot of other exercises. Not necessarily much but enough to stop you doing it without buying things.

This is faulty logic. "People do it, therefore it's correct".

People do do situps, people also think that saturated fat is awful for you and that dietary fat = body fat.

Look at the mainstream emphasis on low fat foods, and the suggestions that eating low fat means you'll lose body fat, or that people STILL Think you can reduce bodyfat in localised areas.

Things like doing arm curls will reduce body fat on your arms, doing sit ups will reduce bodyfat around your middle, it's all nonsense.

Broscience is rife in weightlifting, all those anecdotes that have zero supporting evidence being spouted constantly.

Unless you've got very weak core muscles, sit ups (proper ones that don't use your hip flexors, most people barely even use their stomach muscles for situps, instead letting their hip flexors pull them) aren't going to do much at all.

Body weight exercises only go so far, which is why people do weights. The absolute best sort of things to do for core strength is an exercise that actually engages the need for your core to stabilise your body, so things like squats with a free bar.

A good squat session can demolish your core muscles so that you feel like jelly afterwards, despite the fact that you're not directly using them in the same was as a proper sit up.

A lot of training in a lot of areas is very antiquated, a lot of boxing coaches still refuse to accept that weight lifting is beneficial to boxing, and look at all those professional boxers with stick legs and no arse, despite the fact that thick legs and a thick arse contribute a lot to pulling a heavy punch.

Broscience is why I always take advice from people I don't know (and on this forum) with a pinch of salt... Working in a gym really makes you a skeptic... (don't any more, used to however).

Skinny people without abs is for one of two reasons:

1. While they may be skinny, their body fat is still high enough that they can't see abs.

2. They're skinny, meaning they lack muscle mass. They're not gonna be able to see their abs if they're tiny.

Sit ups are not a great exercise. Abs have very limited potential for growth anyway, so sit ups won't add much (if any) mass to abs.

People in this thread are successful lifters and some strength and conditioning coaches.
Your ignorance of people's opinions because this is a PC forum, coupled with the fact you worked in a gym yet still suggesting what you did, is quite saddening actually. If you actually looked at some of the posts in SA you would see there are some very knowledgable people.
