Staying in London for the new year so am planing to go and see the fireworks round the london eye. Can anyone who has been before offer advice on the best viewing area to aim for and what time to turn up etc.

Many thanks!

I went a few (4 i think) years back...

Me and my mate started well, drinking in a local pub from 7 o'clock but went out for the display at 11, which was a bit late. We were the south side of the river. Decent Veiw but miles back..

On the Bridge is the best place though you may need to be there about 10, if not earlier.

From the lifeboat station on the embankment to Houses on Parliament on the North bank they have an area where you are frisked to get in, can't take in unoppened drinks containers etc.. Just by the lifeboat station is good near Somerset house is where I usually go plus theres usually a sound system set up too, leaving isn't that much of a problem either ..just walk to Blackfriars station (less than a half mile) and you can get on the free tube (till 4:30) and don't forget the tubes run all night for a change...me I'll just walk home from there which should take about 30 minutes depending on how much of the sauce I've had :-)

Went last year. Got on one of the bridges 10ish and there was still ample space. It was amazing. Trouble is afterwards, as it took us at least 90 minutes to walk away from our spot to Waterloo, a walk that would have normally only taken 10-15 minutes.

Beware!

The London eye thing

There's nothing to book, you just turn up and watch. Have done it before and unless you get there very early you'll be lucky to see much. The wind was blowing in our direction also so we just got a face full of firework smoke plus it was raining. Never again.

Can't believe they are still wasting ££££'s on fireworks when the countries up the swanny ....

There are certain traditions which need to be kept up whilst the country is goin through tough times. It's a typical British way of doing things is it not? Stiff upper lip and all that.

It's a great spectical, people come from all over the world to view it and shows the country in good light.

Maybe we should all give up and be miserable.

It's a typical example of people can only see the smaller picture.. You forget this raises the profile of the capital which in turn attracts tourism not just on NYE, but throughout the year.

I would say the Embankment but you'll have to fight for your place.

When we went the other year we watched from the fountain outside Buck palace, granted you dont see the low down stuff but saw pretty much all of it and just set the BBC program to record back at home to watch the bits we didn't see.
