Whatever happened with Apple and Google 3D Maps?

Remember when it Apple and Google rushed to announce their amazing 3D maps?

Whatever happened to those? It really died down. Google said they'd be expending their coverage and flying airplanes to collect the data but it seems to be in beta stage at best.

Apple actually released their map app and it's terrible. Everyone lolled at that so forgot about the gimmicky 3D maps.

This, then Google released maps for iOS and we were all happy about being able to have functional map systems on our idevices

I seem to remember MS and Google making a big fuss of 3D maps and claims of frequent updates on foot to map out large parts of popular cities, etc. to create data for augmented reality systems heh... was quite a nice demo of its potential as well.

No, those are separate and now mature products.

3D was supposed to be the "next gen" thing, where all cities are in 3D, etc... yet after their press conferences neither Apple nor Google have done anything about it. Apple could not even manage to get normal, plain maps right... how were they planning to do 3D maps I don't know.

Apple did, and made a right mess of it, have you seen the apple map app on ios.

i live in newcastle and 3d view of any area in the northeast is just the overhead map at an angle. The tyne bridge etc, well it goes over the tyne the under then over then under then over, then under, then over, its a zig zag bridge lol
