Can you upgrade a laptop cooling fan?

Have you tried I8kfanGUI ?

On this model it isn't possible to control the fan speed using the likes of Speedfan, I8kfanGUI etc and there's nothing in the BIOS which will allow any control over it either.
;)

How long ago did you apply the paste? Just thinking if you keep pulling it apart to reflow the gpu, it won't have a chance to set properly.

Yep, and only yesterday I removed the entire HSF assembly, cleaned it with TIM Cleaner and refitted using fresh MX4.

Thanks for the link OspreyO, I will have a read through that.

I've had the laptop sit here for the last 3 hours running with the rear fan/CPU/GPU plastic cover removed on a small 'el cheapo' single fan notebook cooler which I've positioned so that the fan on it is directly underneath the 8600M. I've got it sat at the following temp ( yellow = 8600 GPU using GPUZ to monitor it, white = T7250 using Coretemp ) :-

I'm going to pick up a better notebook cooler tomorrow, the Trust Xstream looks fairly good and the fans are positioned in exactly the right place to cool the 8600 and the CPU unlike some coolers I've looked at which have fans mounted more centrally, the Xstream has them at either side:-

Are there modded bios available?

Not that I'm aware of. A few folk have asked if anyone has managed to hack the BIOS to allow any adjustments to the fan but to date no one has done it. Dell released a few BIOS updates, the most recent being A12 but they did nothing to allow fan control.

Well, got the XStream cooler this afternoon and the laptop has been on and running for 4 hours now doing fairly modest tasks such as web browsing and a bit of Word. Temps currently sat at :-

The left fan on the XStream is directly underneath the GPU and a few cm away from the CPU which seems perfect. I'm about to fire up Far Cry 3 and see how it manages with that.

Thanks again for the linkage. Lots of good reading there, that guy is on a mission!!!. :D
