My 4/5yr old 9400 with a GS7900Go finally had the GFX problem, lots of coloured squares on boot/bios. Windows 7 got corrupted so I was able to re-install Win8 on it. But I get a square pattern to everything, except plain white. This a Core 2 Duo T7400 (2GHz) with 3.5 GB RAM, 17" 1920x1200 screen. I just wondering is this still worth fixing. Was starting to feel slow, and I was considering getting a SSD for it. Could play back FullHD so was handy for that.

But not sure if its worth trying to bake the gfx and get it working again. Or should let it go. Unfortunately I don't really have funds for another decent laptop atm, it will have to be something cheap. But I'm wondering would even a cheap current generation pentium/i3 with USB 3 would just be a lot quicker. Probably wouldn't have as good a screen though. Would HD3/4000 be better than the GS7900Go?

Err.. your problem hasnt been very well described. If you are comfortable at taking it apart, first thing I would do is dissemble it as much as possible, clean it all out etc, check for signs of GFX being burnt out or similar. Put all back together checking the cables are nice and tight and not frayed or split. Then see what happens I guess.. worst comes to worst sell it on eBay for spares and repairs. If you do this, list out every problem as detailed as you possibly can with pictures and everything. Just to cover yourself. Good luck.

GPU's are replacable in most high end laptops like yours. If you want to keep your laptop check for mxm gpu's and also check if you can replace the nvidia with an ati one.

Not sure I follow you. Needing to Bake a Nvidia card is a well know issue.

The X1400 will fit this model but its quite pricy on amazon/ebay. But ye are right, I either dump it or try fixing it. Its worthless at the moment. Just a PITA spending a few hours dismantling it. Baking it and reassembling it.
