Hi all

I think I may have come back down to Earth with a bump when trying to overclock my set-up.

I have been having real problems getting my RAM up to 1866MHz. This must be down to my CPU. I can get my CPU to 3.8GHz and at times 4.0GHz but it isn't that stable.

I don't know what to do with the BUS speed, so I leave it at 100.

So for overclocking, I considered a Piledriver, because somebody a while ago said that I will not be able to hit 1866MHz with my RAM because of my CPU. But I've just watched a 40min video on YouTube by a respected guy in the industry (I think he is) who says he can't get RAM above 1866MHz with the top Piledriver.

So is it a case of, if you want anything over 1600MHz on RAM you have to go for an Intel set up, or am I just getting my overclocking totally wrong?

If you can make sense of this I commend you (and I am sorry).

Best

It was a little hard to make sense of your post but i'll try my best lol

Bus speed ? surely you mean 200

The video i think must be ttl or whatever his followers call him, sometimes he seems a little too biased in his reviews and tends to go on for far longer then he needs to,the 40 minute video on youtube is just an example.

unless all you do is benchmarking i wouldn't have thought in day to day use you would be able to notice much difference between ram running at 1600MHz and 1866MHz

Whats your set up your running now and at what speed and what is your target for overclocking ?

Both Intel and AMD are much the same in principle for ram clocking. I had 1866 with my 1090T and with my Piledriver using bus speeds of between 233 and 250 and setting the multiplier accordingly. You may need to loosen the timings to CL10 or 11 initially or up the ram voltages to acheive this, see what it says on the ram chips itself.

Then bench with both clocks to see if there is any differences in bandwidth

Thanks

Yes, sorry. I did mean 200 for bus speed.

And yes you got the right video - It's Tiny Tim something or other. I mentioned the video because it's that that made me put the brakes on going for a piledriver.

If there's not much difference between 1866MHz and 1600MHz for general gaming I'll leave it where it is.

You are quite right about my post being confusing. I suppose it was just frustration stemming from the fact that I changed the a black edition so I could overclock easier, then my mobo went up the spout, so I went for the ASUS which was almost £200, and then went for new RAM and paid more for the 1866MHz. Well when it seemed to be stuck at 1600MHz I found it very frustrating.

I'm going to go through an overclocking guide from start to finish because I may be missing something that I have to do. Perhaps I'm not pushing the voltages enough? I'll keep an eye on my temps though.

Thank you

Thanks so much.

This will be the next thing that I'll try.
