Current card as seen in the title. Looking at a single card, not taking the SLI route.

Currently debating a 7970 or a 680, which would you guys be more inclined to get.

I upgraded from a 580 to a 680 and was pleased with the results. But most people seem to agree that the 670 is better value for money.

You're not the one who wants to upgrade, so that's fine :D

@OP.
If you must get top line model, I'd personally more inclined to stick with Nvidia, however they're currently offering the same performance as AMD but at a higher price :p

If you're happy to get next tier down then both the 670 and 7950 offer within 5% performance at around £60-£70 less.

1. sell 580
2. buy 670
3. wonder why you upgraded

is that speaking from experience ?

As a 580 owner I've been watching the £199 7950's in the Clearance section wondering whether to take the plunge but once again games I play are fine.

I would wait tbh, the GTX 580 should play everything atm @ 1080P fine. Hopefully Nvidia will bring out real high end cards in terms of memory bandwidth etc with the GTX 700 series and offer a bigger upgrade..

If you really wanna upgrade now the HD 7950 3GB offers the best bang for buck right now..

Ordered the EVGA GTX 680 but i cancelled due to some bad review regards the red screen.

EVGA do have a great track record with RMA's and have an active rep or two on these forums.

Speaking from experience, if your budget allows and you want to stay Nvidia, go for the Lightning. Very fast card 'out of the box'

This is where I struggle to move on from my 480's in sli, no current gen single card can compete with it and the price of current gen cards makes it impossible to upgrade from what I have, my advice is to wait for the next gen, it won't be long now

Agreed, GTX 580 to GTX 780 would be a decent upgrade..

I think people are going to be disapointed when the GTX 780 does show up. I don't think the performance will be much better than the GTX 680 and it will still be overpriced. Also unless nvidia slim the chip down a bit, it will be a hot running/poor clocker.

I just upgraded my 580 Lighting to a 680 Lightning and I'm very happy with the results. I also went from 1080p to 1440p on the same day. Even with the massive resolution jump I get better frames in the games that I played before and after (AC3, Far Cry 3, NFS:MW, COD9). I also sold my 580 on some auction site for £200 so the upgrade only cost me £220 for the card and my mate had a spare U2711 sitting around that I got for £250 :D.

Thanks for all the replies guys, however it's not so much that I NEED to upgrade, it's the fact that in 5 months, I'll have moved out and be married - so this is potentially the last upgrade I'll be doing for the foreseeable future.

Actually getting tempted to just buy a 690 and to hell with the consequences

So damn indecisive.

7970 is the best single gpu card (matrix platinum). But if I were you I would keep using the 580 longer and wait.

Some people would argue that point, the MSI lightning is just as good if not better when it comes to HD 7970s

The GTX 690 is a fantastic card but it is rather expensive. You are also limited to resolutions up to 2560 x 1600 the same as the GTX 670 and 680 or you start getting hit by the lack of vram compared to the HD 7950/70s.

Speaking from experience, Id stay with the 480s if you dont mind the heat and extra power usage.

I swapped from 480 SLI to a 680 and in most games it was slightly slower, but temps and power usage were much better :)

Yeah that is true about the V-RAM, however I am only gaming on a single screen at 1920x1080 - And I really do love my monitor, so I don't see me changing that for a few years at least. True however that the 690 is expensive, but this is the last chance really, tempted to just blow the money on a product I'm certain I will love.

Personally I'd go 7950 CF overclocked. AMD got a kick up the arse recently as we all know so they've upped their game, and have got in with developers. It will last you a long time, especially at 1080p and will cost half that of the 690 for the same if not better performance + extra VRAM. That would be my choice if I were you :)

Also you won't need to OC them right away.
