Higher Res or Higher Refresh Rate?

Hi guys.

Currently in a bit of a pickle trying to decide which route to go down with my next upgrade. I currently run a dual monitor setup, with 2 24" LG monitors, one is IPS LED, one just standard LCD. I love the IPS, so want to replace the LCD with another IPS.

My question is, do I go for a 120Hz at 24", or a 60Hz at 27" and 1440p?

I play a lot of games, mostly MOBAs, RPGs etc. although I do play a few FPS games also. My rig runs a 2GB KFA2 ExOC GTX 660Ti, so on most games I easily see 100+ FPS, even on BF3 with high/highest settings, although I understand this card falls off slightly at higher res.

Would I get more benefit from getting a 120Hz monitor and making the most out of that framerate, or sacrificing framerate for the higher res?

I wasnt away that their were many ips 120hz monitors (if any?). I went the 27" 1440p route - have to say I'm loving it so far (asus pb278q btw) but as you said the FPS can take a bit of a drop, depending on the game itself it may be major (sleeping dogs fps dropped massivley) or minor (diablo 3 runs with all the bells and whistles with ease). However as you said the lag time of an ips monitor is meant to be very noticable, since i only play bf3 very casual and havnt tried a 120hz monitor, I cant say anything from person experience :).

The best monitor for you depends on what you want most out of it, I was in a similar position as yourself, and pretty much posted the same question, weighed it up and went down the ips 272 High resolution route.

You first need to determine if you can even notice a significant difference between 60fps and 120fps (you need to try a 120hz monitor to find out...) Most people can't, the only thing I can notice is a very very very slight better fluidity of the image, but its nothing I would spend money on, and ask yourself why do you need 120hz if you are a casual FPS player? If you can't, upgrading to 1440p @ 60hz will give you the most back, 27inch 1440p is gorgeous for everything gaming,movies even just browsing, massive upgrade from a 1080p 24inch and will make your current games you play look that much better. BF3, PS2 and other FPS look bloody amazing @ 1440p, its not even funny compared to a 24inch 1080p. I had to send mine back due to faults and using this crappy asus 24inch while i get a replacement is just horrible in comparison.

I was only asking about 120Hz, as I didn't want to upgrade to a 1440p monitor if my Gfx card would struggle to get the most out of it. Therefore the 120Hz would be the obvious choice as that, by most accounts, is a big upgrade.

However, you guys both seem to have the same opinion, that 1440p is a better upgrade, so I think you might persuade me. Thanks for your input, feel free to add to this thread though guys as I won't get around to ordering anything for a day or so.
 
For 1440p all you need to do is turn the AA down. Keep your settings as they are, turn AA down (its not really needed at that res anyway) and your done. You will get less FPS sure but not THAT much less AA eats into your FPS like a pig stuffing its fat face.

On a related note, do the Yamakasi monitors still have as good a reputation as they had? I remember reading about them a few months back, and they had stellar reviews. If not, I guess there is plenty else on the market these days.
