Filling in my visa application to work in India for half of 2013!!

Looking forward to it but wondering if anyone has any advice or must see's while out there?

I will be based in Bangalore.

Bottle water is a must!

Don't buy food from street vendors.
Don't give money to beggars.
Don't walk around looking like a tourist - pickpockets will be rife.
Watch out for anyone on anything motorized as the driving standards are awful
Agree the fare with the taxi driver before setting off

Tldr: Learn the culture quick

Visit the taj.
Go out into non tourist areas to see the best of India.

Only for a week so cant help much.
I worked south of calcutta and enjoyed it the food was amazing.
People think we have poverty in the uk but India has REAL poverty.

Enjoy your time there.

Aha cheers guys. Ill miss my blue steaks but sounds to be good fun.

Im heading out there with my current job so wont be looking for work and should be there for a few months. Visa application says until end of Aug :D

This is about what I was going to say. Especially the water.

My auntie worked out there and she found it a bit daunting as a woman but she said the blokes that were there as well loved it.

Don't.

Advice from the mrs. Yes you can live like a king or queen, but you don't want to be king/queen of the dump and spend your time being driven between places by your driver.

Makes you wonder why they come across as stupid and incompetent most of the time tbh :p

Almost makes no difference. I spent a period there trying to live in a bubble - I was in one of the best hotels in the country, had private BMWs to get me places, ate nothing that wasn't prepared in the hotel etc and got very, very sick. Once recovered, I was eating dinner for 50p in the market and was not ill again!

It's simply impossible to prevent your exposure to the various microorganisms in India that will upset your well being; the general standards of sanitation are low enough that you will be exposed to it, even in the most Westernised of places. It's probably easier to just go for it and deal with the consequences with drugs!

Standards of education are much lower, but most significantly the call centres and outsourcing agencies breed a sense of total obedience that makes many of them no longer able/willing to think for themselves.

Have come across that a lot, follow the script even when it is obviously wrong

Street vendor food is OK! India has no hygine standards, bad or good. Stick to fried.

The train station pakoras are nice :)

1 golden rule for food anywhere in the world:- Eat what, where and when the locals eat.

Fast turnover and return customers = good. :)

Do not eat meat unless you know exactly where it's from and how it's been prepared and cooked. Trust me, it's not worth the five minutes of enjoyment.

Boiled water for sure.

Watch out for 'sealed' water that is actually dirty water filled and resealed.

Bar that, not much that you can do. I have a lot of family there so they tended to sort it out for me. You'll learn quickly. And watch for pick pockets. They'll spot you a mile of even if you dress in a sari ;)

P.S. On a serious note, if you're a women, don't travel alone at night and try and keep someone around. I wouldn't let my girlfriend go anywhere alone in India. It isn't safe even in areas which are local (that my family were originally based).

Enjoy it; you'll feel like you're getting thrown in at the deep end but its a great experience and Indians are extremely friendly in the work place, if a little shy at first. Eat with them at lunch and don't get sucked into an expat bubble. If they invite you out to places join them just to see what its like.

Despite what people say about call centres, education etc you will find that (nearly) all Indians in the workplace work very very hard. If you go there thinking you're better than them and act condescending towards them you will find yourself alienated pretty quickly and it would make your experience much less enjoyable.

You will get sick no matter how careful you are with your food and drink; that said, don't let your standards slip. Buy proper sealed water from a trustworthy seller.

Get all your vaccinations done too beforehand.

Get used to them staring too, it is pretty rude but they will stare at the foreigner.

Street food can be ok providing its deep fried and not meat based as long as you watch the vendor fry the food you're about to eat and serve it to you straight after.

If theres a Culture Shock book I'd recommend you buy it.

My family are from India (I'm Anglo-Indian) and I have travelled and worked there extensively. It will be what you make of it, but hopefully you will enjoy your experience of India.

Very much looking forward to it and ive already got a few connections out there from another firm who ive delivered training to.

Will take pics and keep a thread on here to show you guys anything strange and wonderful I come accross compared to the peaceful (lol) life I live in belfast

Enjoy the street food, it's good

But only where the locals are eating.

Do not drink tap water, buy bottled or drink fizzy drinks or similar.

The rest has been mentioned :)
