BMW and M Power Owners

So does anyone in this thread have any idea about software and specifically firmware on the BMW cars.

My M3 is running E89X-11-03-510 according to INPA. Now apparently this does not include the latest greatest Engine firmware sometimes referred to as 240E(E) which alledgedly increases power output by up to 30 bhp (although this is dependent on which forums you read)!

I bought the car in Sept 2012 and asked for the latest DCT/Engine firmware to be loaded on it. The BMW dealer agreed to this but clearly this has not been done. Now they are arguing that unless there is a problem with the car they will not flash firmware.

Anyone actually managed to get a BMW dealer to flash their firmware? Does it make a difference?

Generally speaking dealers will only flash the firmware to fix a problem. Is not like the latest version of iOS or something :p

Well apparently it is...lol.

It seems (and I am taking this with a quite a bit of salt) but the latest (recent few) firmware upgrades on the M3 Engine/DCT have bought about increases of up to 30 bhp at the wheels. I'll have some of that, thank you!

It also seems fairly normal for people to ask for it to be done when purchasing a car, and generally it is! So I feel a little short changed, seeing as Sytner want £220 for a full car update!

Why would it give a 30hp boost on a NA engine? If it was that simple why would they have bored out the engine in the M3 GTS?

Took a deposit on my E46 M3 last night. Subject to an inspection at the local BMW specialist. I've heard this particular specialist are pretty keen to tear cars apart when they inspect them so we shall see how it goes.

Should have my M54 330i in the garage this week for it's head rebuild - fingers crossed it starts working properly :p Still at a bit of a loss on why the engine wasn't reading any oil but it's a lesson learnt. My local specialist seems to think it's rare for them to blow a valve like that and thinks it's more likely that supermarket fuel could have burnt a valve but we'll find out in the next few days.

Yeah.... that'll be it

I think you need a different specialist.

After nothing but bad experiences with them, it's exactly why I've not bothered with them this time round.

Oddly enough, they're massively popular around here so lord knows if it's just me they don't like, or if everyone else is getting shoddy work done.

There are "specialists" and then there are specialists. I much prefer the latter than any...any BMW dealership I've ever been to. Don't tar all specialists with the same brush.

Cant you just turn up and say it is shifting badly on an intermitent basis and see if theyll put new software on?

Go in for the kill with a totally subjective fault, not something they could test. How about:

"It feels slow compared to my mates car. Anything you can do?"

They aint gonna put it on an RR for you, so I bet the firmware flasher gets whipped out.

That sounds like a fairly decent idea, might leave it for a month or two then go in with that problem! Let's hope they don't kill it in the process and perhaps the benefits gained will be more than lost in the 'test driving' they will do to ensure they have 'fixed' the problem lol!

Might just get Evolve to do it for £150! At least I know they will do it properly.

It doesnt look like its worth it

Stage 1 - E90 E92 E93 M3 Evolve ECU Remap
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ECU Remap Performance Software with Vmax
E9x M3 4.0 V8, performance gain approx. 15-25bhp incl. V-MAX release
Prices:
ECU Remap and speed limiter removal - £699
Speed Limiter Removal only - £499
Available worldwide with the evolve-R Cable

Most E92 / E92 M3's will produce in the region of 405-415bhp on our dyno.
With the ECU remap we from 425-435bhp once an adaptation time period has elapsed.
Through careful remapping of the factory BMW DME tables, various elements such as ignition timing, fuel delivery, vanos position and part throttles are reworked to create performance gains.
Torque calculations are correctly to give consistent power.
The latest version of our ecu flash has been throughly developed and gives an actual gain in performance rather than just a quoted figure.
The result is an M3 which feels far sharper and pulls harder through the rev band, especially over 4500rpm.

Software versions for cars with centre exhausts / x-pipes are also fully developed

Dyno Graph available opon request.

Overview:
- Fully developed on dyno and road for optimal performance
- 15-25+ bhp performance gain
- Speed limiter removal
- Sharper throttle response and drivability
- ECU not opened
- Available worldwide (please contact for further details)

lol at supermarket fuel comment.

IT'S ACID I TELL THEE

Fuel fit for the peasants in their three wheeled steeds! I didn't even bother to tell him that it'd been run on V-Power and Tesco 99 since I've had it, would've broken his whole way of thinking :p
