Has this happened to anyone else?

I've had an unused account with Barclays for over a year now. I've kept it open as i sometimes BT money over to my mom if shes struggling.

Anyway, got a letter saying the account is overdrawn, so looked online and it said BETFAIR on the 26th Dec. Upon ringing them, they confirmed my card is being used by someone else.

Card is now blocked etc.

How on earth can people do this? The card itself is not really used apart from a cash point in a big local supermarket a couple of times in the past year. No statments get thrown away ect.

How can someone be using my account on betting sites

Skimmed at cashpoint or retailer, not really that hard to work out

Unused would suggest the OP hasn't used the card recently, so skimming should be out.

Was it ever used online, even many months ago? Perhaps it was in a database that has was compromised?

Perhaps your PC is compromised.

Halifax have blocked my card many many times.

Every time i do any decent transaction to buy something online i have to call them up and be all like, hey yes can you let me buy this thanks.

Doesn't necessarily need to be used. HSBC got in touch with me a while ago and said my card was part of a "list of numbers" that had been supposedly "compromised" and therefore I had to have a new card - wasn't that bothered, especially when the new one turned up with wireless chip - makes the early morning trips to McDonald's for breakkie a lot easier if nothing else

This happened to me over Christmas too.

It was a card that gets used but usually only for my groceries. They managed to take about £100 - now in the process of being refunded - mostly from online betting/bingo companies. Thankfully both Phones4U and Dial-a-phone declined transactions from this person.

I only had ever been in contact with one of the companies that my debit card was used at. I'm fairly certain that they've had their database hacked but obviously I can't prove it.

There seems to be a Christmas theme running here. My card got done Christmas 2007. The card itself was only 2 months old as well, yet someone managed to use a cloned copy at a European ATM to withdraw €300. Bear in mind that last time I was abroad was 2003, 4 years prior. I've written this before on OcUK and someone responded saying that my card details was probably part of a list that got sold abroad.

It's a good idea to have more than one bank imo

savings
current #1 stick bill money/spending money in here
current #2 transfer money from #1 to here when you need to make a purchase via online banking.
never worry about your bill money being raped via credit card fraud

given its online betting it would have been a bin hit if you haven't used it. When i worked for capital one we used to get regular reports from mastercard and visa of Bin hits.

For those who dont know what a bin hit is...

Bin Attack Fraud

Now, fraudsters are using the Internet to access software such as Creditmaster that will allow them to generate new card numbers from an existing good one. These numbers are in sequence order within the same card number bin – the first 12 digits of the number. This is step one of the fraud.

Step two is to test these new card numbers at merchants’ Internet sites. By trying out all the new numbers with a transaction amount under fifty dollars and using the same expiry date as the original card they are recognising that cards in the same sequence are usually given the same expiry date. The numbers that prove to be successful are then used in step three.

The final step is to use the known good card numbers at different internet-based merchant sites to find a “hit”. This is a transaction or transactions with values between $500 and $10,000. Once banks detect that these are fraudulent transactions they reverse the transactions back to the merchant who ends up wearing the cost. These merchants tend to be IT/high tech companies in Asia, USA and Europe. There is no New Zealand-based fraud of this type so far.

The online betting sites are often used as a means to test if the card details work, if they do they then progress to try and seriously nail the card. Mobile phone top ups is also another favorite of johnny go fraudy. They never aim to claim anything from these testers

Upon speaking to betfair it is my name and bank details used but a different DOB and different address. The account was made boxing day.

I left Barclay's over a year ago and not used the card in at least 6 months. Last to use was when my mom was short so I BT some cash over as the card is at her house.

The fraud team say they do small amounts first to test the card.

Seems like they have farmed some details from somewhere then rather than bin hit

That's barclays for you, they let the fraudsters take your money but when you make too many online purchases in one day they think that it's fraudulent and lock down the card.

Happened to me a few months ago, as above they use the card to purchase really cheap items (Santander said mine was used against 4 transactions each one less than £5).
Luckily for me Santander did spot fraudulent use and blocked my card before any real damage was done. i remember the day clearly as I was really peed off that I couldnt buy some cat food :p

Exactly this with RBS. Just fricking missed the next day delivery too due to the frigging delay so now iv gotta wait till monday.

It happens for like EVERY order over £30

And it once happened on an £8 order. Stupid.

Had mine done on the 24th of december :( They put £1500 through but the £1 bit was still pending.

Phoned MBNA on the 27th who said their fraud team wernt in?!?! 28th came and got a call back and everythings being sorted :)

Hate it when this happens...GF noticed an xxx subscription on our CC.

Thankfully she believed the hacking story!

In 2003, someone stole one my dads card and managed to use over £76,000 in petrol on it in under 2 weeks. Barclays didn't even get suspicious over it. He got all the money back in the end, but the fact no one got suspicious is worrying lol.
