Behind you... Naked!
I have been using a Samsung chat for a while now and its EXACTLY what I want.

I did however decide to go with a contract since Im using the phone like hell and its costing a fortune on PAYG.

Forgetting about the silly stuff, there is a deal with this Galaxy Ace and the contact deal seemed to be exactly what Iwant ( Time will tell of course ) and its not really the phone that I wanted, as I said I am happy with the chat.

The thing is, that with the chat, I simply plugged it into my PC and I was able to use it as a basic flash disk, and I could copy my files to/from it nice and easy. However with the Galaxy, I have to use the KIES app.

Now, I can I know do a semi-get-around by simply not using KIES, however it does not see the Phone unless I have it actually running... As soon as I quit KIES, the phone vanishes.

This now gives me 2 problems.

1 - I can only use the Samsung Galaxy with KIES and Windows

2 - I use Linux mostly

So, is there a solution out there for me?

Windows does require a driver to see it in MS mode so not sure if Linux will be OK with it out of the box, the drive is in the kies installer although it's available separately as a package.

3D candy is right though, you just mount as USB when it asks usually.

I have read in plenty of other sites about the debugging and it makes no difference whether on or off on mine.

I shouldnt have to use kies, but in order to have access, I have to have it running.

Seperate drivers are indeed available and I have tried them and on different PCs but they did not help, although they certainly did somethign because I have had to reinstall kies after them.

As for it asking, it did this on the chat, when I set it to ask on conection, but I have not found any options at all for asking or setting to a given way.

If it's not asking for it you'll need to manually put it in USB mode. I wish i could tell you where that is in options but it sometimes lurks in weird places like network settings under wireless. You need to find USB settings and in there will be a way of setting to MS mode, then you connect the cable, then press a button.

Later versions of Android dropped this and just made it a Multimedia device which is even worse if you ask me.

Samsung Chat is great. There is no problems with that.

Its the Galaxy Ace thats been a bugger.

Anyway, I have found the solution... You need to kind of slide the top of the screen down, to brign up another menu. This is the same slidey downy bit for when you get new icons on the top like Texts and so on.

I can now do it without KIES.

Kies is only really any cop for Firmware updates and so on, the way it does music and images etc is stupid to me.

Ok, one other thing before I go...

It is synced with my PC, or rather with my GMail account.

For some unknown reason, I have 34 thousand emails in my phone! FFS!

How the hell can I do a bulk delete on them?

Not sure why you think that's a 'bugger' feature of the Ace - the notification bar is often used for things like this on many Android phones. The notification bar is one of the most used UI features in Android so I'm surprised to hear it being described as 'kind of slide the top of the screen down' - this is pretty basic stuff that even my 60 something parents can manage. ;)

No offence intended btw. :)

None taken ( He says while stroking a gun )

You seem to be confusing me... I dont think this is a "bugger". I never quite said that at all. I said the Galaxy ace as a whole has been a bugger. This particulr feature I kind of like, plus, in my defence, I have had the phone a week and no one has EVER once actually mentioned about the sliding down feature in any way at all for anything.

So, while I have found it a great feature for my notofications etc, not once has it suggested anything about the USB connections.

strange phone, one min it says its out of memory and then the next 7gb left on card, came full from new out of the 2gb it had and most of that can't be uninstalled, ah well its cheap and gf almost happy with it, and saved me a few bob as she was looking at a iphone :)

any easy good advice apart from not being a tight person and get her another one.

thanks

Strange, my dad recently got the Galaxy Ace and when I connect the phone in mass storage mode (as soon as it detects the PC connection, an option comes up asking me to connect in this mode) I can use Windows Explorer on it fine. Didn't even need to install Kies.

Internal memory and storage memory are 2 seperate things...
