Checking my credit card statement I see a charge for £35 from Avis a week ago.

Will call them tomorrow to ascertain the rationale behind the charge, but find it a bit odd that the car was hired from the end of July till mid August, and they have not phoned, emailed or sent a letter explaining the charge before taking it from the credit card.

When returning the car in August, they appeared to inspect it and let us go on our way. I can't think of any issue the car, and did not have any sort of accident whilst driving.

I was just wondering if anyone has had any similar experience with Avis/car rentals?

Avis often decide to remove money from my company card for "fuel"when I've brimmed the tank before returning but its rarely anything more than a couple of weeks later. If it is this a short, sharp email normally sorts it out. does sound like some sort of fine though given the timescale, bus lane etc?

It's very close to a valet charge. We used to hire for work and get charged like this all the time.

Strange you haven't got a invoice though.

Spoke to AVIS. Turns out its a traffic violation. They couldn't tell me which one but somewhere in Sicily i've done something bad. Should receive the violation in the post, but am more curious why the charge is €42.30. Seems quite precise!

Maybe some sort of admin fee on top?

This Europcar charged us 14EUR for the privilege of handing our (well, my mate's :D) details to the French police when we got caught doing not 120kph on the way to Le Mans. (In a 7 seater, with 7 people in it... the poor 1.5 dCi was loving this)

Good experience? Would you recommend it? I am thinking of going this year.

A common fine in Italy is going down a private street without a residents permit. I know several people who have been fined this way. You don't even need to park down the road. Just driving down it can trigger the fine and apparently the signs are not obvious.
