been doing allot of research and its basically down to one of the following options :

Intel I7 3820
Gigabyte X79-UD3
CM Storm Trooper

Total : £502.88

or

Intel I7 3770k
MSI Z77A-G45 Intel Z77
CM Storm Trooper

Total : 484.97

To compliment the existing components :

Silver Arrow cooler
12GB DDR3 1600Mhz Corsair low profile RAM
Coolermaster Silent Pro 700W
XFX 6950 2GB
Asus DCUII 6950 2GB
64GB M4 SSD
40GB Intel SSD

any help tipping the balance would be appreciated , considering the 2011 platform as I'm hoping to have better funds in the next year to possibly jump onto Ivybridge E or the 3930k.

Mainly used for gaming , programming , video editing , occasional photo editing and file compression.

so the 3770k is mostly the fastest for most of the stuff you do and also cheaper so win win

You are missing the point. The 1155 socket is basically a dead end, the 2011 isn't. Although the 3820 (which is a cheaper CPU) isn't as good in the benchmarks he can drop a much better CPU in later, even though it would cost a bomb.

Personally I'd probably do this.....

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3770K 3.50GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W) - Retail £259.99
1 x MSI Z77 MPower Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 ATX Motherboard £139.98
1 x CM Storm Trooper Full Tower Gaming Case - Black £119.99
Total : £519.96 (includes shipping : FREE).

The mobo has built in wifi and bluetooth and is a nice price whilst on offer, of course there are cheaper alternatives. I'm not saying it's the best way to go but me personally I know I won't spend £400+ on a CPU ;)

I would go with the Ivy bridge 3770k you put there. Though if it is mainly for gaming you could save £££ and go with 3570k i5.

I think if you're only doing occasional photo editing and the likes, you won't see a massive difference and it may not be worth the extra mooleh.

And it's a great case you picked :)

while i agree to the point raised above in some ways with sockets etc, the dead part i don't, there's plenty life let in it for a few more years yet, as long as there's cpu to fit in it and upgrade to etc.

prices fall in older tec when new stuff comes out, so for me i'd have something cheaper now, and upgrade later, 2011 stuff for me is higher in price but will be lower later, how much more only time will tell, but in the 6 months to a year that i'll be waiting for my next upgrade, i'm thinking / hopping quite a lot cheaper

remember i went i7 Asus P8Z77-V LX2 Intel Z77 with 16gb of ram when everyone else was i5 with 8gb and better spec boards, i'll upgrade later for what i've saved and sell my stuff for now and see little real time cost in the time i've used it, so the return / loss wouldn't be as high / low than spending more now

i don't agree with the rule where all pc's/ builds have to last a set number of years, sometimes it 's better to have what you want now and is also more cost effective as well than plan too far ahead.

2011 doesn't do anything for me, latest stuff never does, always get burnt with the price, and as the speed isn't different with the new socket, not worth it either, yes when new chips come out then maybe worth having it, but as yet i'll stick with my first advice, so unless poster wants a pc for the next 3/5 years with no upgrades etc, 2011 is better, if you want better value now and upgrade when cheaper, pick the second one, price for either is so close either wouldn't matter

so depends on choice, re looking at it, with arguments and prices etc and if your ram is ok, i'll change me mind and go 2011 as cost is too close to call

so in the end agree with honosuseri again :)

Zak there is no CPU for you to upgrade to on the 1155 socket. The i7 3770K is as good as it gets which is why I'm calling it a "dead-end". The 2011 socket still has Ivybridge Extreme CPUs to be seen.

Prices fall in older tech? How much is the i5 2500K compared to the i5 3570K? Not much in it at all, infact even the PhenomII CPUs from AMD aren't going cheap cheap (like the budgie). Only way to get things cheaper is getting them 2nd hand.

The reason I suggested the 1155 socket is that he has 1600mhz RAM, any higher than this makes little odds on the 1155 socket. To use an X79 mobo as doomedspeed says ideally you want quad channel and faster RAM than 1600mhz would be nice. If he thinks he will have the funds to buy an Ivy-E CPU next year then he can sell what ever he buys now to fund getting the RAM and mobo to run it.......if the upgrade is worth it of course ;)

P.S Doomedspeed, I'll take a gamble just for fun and say he had a 4GB kit and then added another 8GB to make 12GB. If I'm wrong everyone can laugh at my expense lol

and re reading what i'd wrote, i edited it and amended it to agree with you, i won't be upgrading mine in 6 months with a newer cpu yes, just a newer vga card etc

but will sell it on and get a new one as soon as i get me first slow down, as someone always wants a upgrade :)

i never loose out, got mine at a good price and will sell for a good price as i already know the m8 who's looking at it now :)

but yes not everyone wants to change parts every 6 months or so, no big deal to me.

i like a fresh install of windows every few months or so anyway.

never used triple memory or quad either, will have to research it more

Zak when doing a link why do you put h88t and not http!

as im old and come from elsewhere, im a ex mod off another board where you can't use http so i alter it.

after 7 years i fancied a change, been a member of OC since 2005 but never used the forum here until dec this year

I would defintely go with socket 2011. The Core i7 3820 is such an underrated CPU but it performs extremely well. I went with socket 2011 and Core i7 3820 initially to have a good performing system and then hopefully later if could get a 3930K and later again an Ivy-Bridge E.
I now have a 3930K I bought 2nd hand to a great price (half the price of a new).

I have no doubt I would either buy socket 2011 or wait for Haswell. I think socket 1155 reached the end of the road now.

wow that's a lot of replies ,

I also have a 1TB and a 500GB HDD which i forgot to note last night , but am looking at additional storage.

I have 6 2GB ram sticks from my triple channel set up before.

The reason I chose the MSI Motherboard is I would really like dual x16 slots for my 2 6950's to allow for better crossfire setup when i eventually upgrade them. And need good spacing between the pcie slots for the current cards.

Thanks for the replies so far very helpful.

You'll need new RAM then..

2011 and 1155 don't accept triple channel memory.

I didn't know there was a difference in the ram other than the configuration you had to use them in ?

Am planning to use 4 2GB sticks and upgrade the ram in the future , one of the sticks is unreliable anyway I just couldn't face postage to the Netherlands.

You can reuse all the ram but if you run 3 sticks the board may revert to single channel mode, looking at the manual will show the permutations for the ram.

well that's three votes for the 3770k vs the one supporting the 3820 , Does the bad tim intel used on the ivy bridge really make it a bad overclocker as one of the reasons i was considering the 2011 socket was it was larger allowing more more heat dissipation despite having nearly double the tdp of the ivybridge chip.

with my budget of £550 is the MSI mother board suggested by honosuseri the best I could get ?
