I've always read other forum members posting about their partner/wives defying all logic when it comes to decisions about cars, until recently i haven't really experienced it.

When i first met my now wife, she had a 2004 Vauxhall Corsa. I could think of much worse cars to own but when our son was born there was next to no room for the push chair etc so we pretty much traded a straight swap against a late 2003 Astra. Its not a pretty car (although in great condition) but its served us well. Its never broken down, never needed anything replacing apart from some drop links, a thermostat and a track rod end. Every MOT its has its passed without quibble, its a brilliant run around and if it wasn't for the cost of the tax it would be reasonably cheap to run.

So, its at that magical 100K miles mark and she's now looking to exchange it for something a little newer with fewer miles on. A new job is on the horizon which means mileage would go up a bit, probably around 8-10k a year.

She did like the Ford Focus, but 'logic' tells her that because my mum has a 2009 model and we're not looking at something that new, it won't be as good and therefore is ruled out. Second choice was a VW Beetle. No reason other than they look 'cute'. 2.0 8v isn't a great engine, 1.6 would be underpowered and 1.9 TDI's hold their money extremely well, coupled with the fact the boot just about holds a packet of crisps, it doesn't make it a wise choice.

That leads us on to a "practical" choice. We don't use my son's push chair much any more so boot space isn't an issue. We have my Octavia for when we go away so bags etc aren't a problem. The second choice? A Vauxhall Zafira. An oversized version of what she already has which apparantly is good, because it has 7 seats, which is vital for that one or two occasions a year when we go out for a family day trip as it means all going in one car.

Rotty got off lightly with a 206CC :D

:o

Not so good for the supermarket runs, shopping will be put on seats and parking could be a pain.

Why get rid of a working car for something equally as dull?

She's not bothered about an exciting drive, however that was my argument. We have a perfect working car which has never failed us, its no where near being ready to be thrown away yet but if we sell it, its worth pennies really :(

Opened the thread expecting this video which has been floating around facebook recently:

What Zafira? the A you might well keep up the reliability but the B is a useless pile of plastic poop, had both never have the B again, ever, if it were the last car on earth and I had no legs I'd rather drag myself.

It would probably a Zafira A, she quite likes the SRi version but they hold silly money compared to an "ordinary" one.

We had a CDTi Elegance and it was solid and well specified if dull, the B was a CDTi Club, I've still got a crate of plastic trim / covers that slowly fell off that I didn't give the new 'lucky' owner/victim.

like you said its going to be worth buttons and if you change it to a focus youll be paying good money for a completely horizontal upgrade (ie i cant see it being worth it)

if the astra isnt exciting enough, why not get something like a new bag or some jewellery, that will be less of a waste and more exciting

My sister, 4 kids, married, decided she wanted a smaller car than her Merc e320 CDI Estate , she bought a brand new fully loaded 116i BMW!

They still have the Merc, but only until her husband gets his new company car, which is going to be (perhaps) an F01 7 Series.

I suppose they will hire a mini bus or use both cars for family days out.

When I asked her why she opted for the 1 instead of the F10 Touring she was considering, she said she wanted a smaller car & engine due to getting too many points in her old Merc, the consideration of transporting the 4 kids seems to have passed her by completely!

This womens logic is born from ignorance as to what a nice car is like, left to her own devices my GF bought herself a Ford Focus.

The moment i showed her how much better a decent car is to be in and drive, she was more than happy to drive one. She now drives a BMW 730i and will be swapping to a RR Vogue soon. She would never have got either of these cars off her own back but that is only through not understanding cars, so show her some decent ones and let her decide once she has the whole picture.

Op, get the trousers on and tell her it's silly to get rid of a working reliable car. Is she part of the 'oh no it's about to blow up as it's on 100k' club? :)

Not really, the mileage doesn't bother her too much, although if its talked of in conversations its "OMG, my car has done 100K now". She didn't particularly "want" the Astra, it was just a practical solution that she has wanted to change ever since she sat in it :D

My girlfriend rocks in this instance, she bought a 57 Focus, then as a second card an MR2(N/A) which she then swapped for a Scooby(WRX)

well, if she pays, let her get the Beetle with the 8v engine, then laugh like a maniac everytime she moans about it :D

My wife falls into the car is different cause it's a different colour group I'm afraid. I'm looking to replace her current black Civic, which incidently isn't a Civic if it's green or blue and to her eyes a new shape Yaris is the closest thing to the shape of her Civic, but the Yaris must be silver or grey else all bets are off. Been looking for the right Yaris for the last 2 months :(
