purchasing windows, 7 or 8 ... or 7 and wait...

after doing a bit more research im happy to jump onto windows 8 now.

Problem now is. I have an old XP OEM key but HD long dead and disc gone.

I also have a working win 7on this laptop but id like to keep it that way as no need to change.

So do i qualify for the upgrade? is it possible to do clean install without having the prev version installed?

Stay with Windows 7. Windows 8 is just a marketing fad.

Jesus, will guys STFU repeating every piece of FUD you can find on the net and just try the damn OS yourself....

thanks for advice guys, 8 being faster is a plus of course. Im going to read the forums abit more as well i think get an idea what ppl think of 8.

thing is as well. i can buy win 7 pro and win 8 pro for exact same price like pointed out above..

Ppl nvr like when things change and im hoping this is the reason for most of the negative comments on it.

The problem with reading forums is the fact that most people trying to post negative stuff haven't actually used the OS, they are just regurgitating stuff said on other fourms by other guys who haven't used it either.... You then end up with moronic posts like the one I quoted above...!

never mind the metro stuff, that's enough to choose 8 over 7 IMO

Yes, but some random guy I've never met on the net says the OS doesn't look the same as 7 so he won't try it, because somebody else said they won't try it either so it sucks, WAAAAA, WAAAAA WAAAA.

I'm not overly impressed with Windows 8 to be completely honest (and yes I have it).

It apperas faster than Windows 7, but actually all it does when it shuts down it switches the screen off faster, the computer is still on the same amount of time. Log in speed is quicker, but the computer is still thinking (hdd light flickering) for the same amount of time that Win7 did before it was ready.

I do like the flat style and the manual ssd optimizer, but the reason that hasn't been added to Windows 7 is just a marketing fad.

I also don't like the fact that my laptop's ssd keeps locking and needs resetting by being attached to another computer and me having to use the power cycle trick, that didn't used to happen with Windows 7. Not to mention all the issues I had installing the stupid OS on that thing originally to start with due to graphics driver issues, though that does appear to be fixed now.

Basicly, some of us prefer Windows 7 for good reasons, not everyone is just joining the bandwagon and haven't tried 8. I am currently thinking about going back to Windows 7 on my laptop. (Image is saved.)

What rubbish, that just isn't the case.
W8 boots faster and desktop is useble well before win7. As shower in every single test by every reviewer out there.

You are having issues and blaming it on win8, sounds like those issues run deeper than the os. Possibly dodgy hardware.

First thing to check is ssd drivers. You can also try to enable HDD hot swap in bios.

I want Windows 7 back on my htpc purely because some software I run has issues with Windows 8 - this isn't a problem with Windows 8 itself, but enough to put me off until I can use it properly.

I don't find the boot times to be quicker than Windows 7 on the same hardware, without any driver issues.

If you haven't got 7 then just get 8 I can understand why some don't want to update to 8 but most of them are finding excuses not to. ( and many of those haven't even tried it they are just surface reading other peoples comments and regurgitating it.) Sure don't change what isn't broken but 8 is a superior OS on every level. Of course I had to update so that I can support customers who use windows 8 but I do not regret it.

Once you learn the shortcuts windows 8 is so simple it's frankly unbelievable.

You don't have to use metro UI at all but if you do it's just a case of learning the "windows key + a letter" shortcuts and you can zip round windows 8 like you never could with windows 7. Then there's the multi screen improvements being able to manipulate the two task bars independently of eachother.

Windows 7 may not be obsolete like XP is but it's been improved upon vastly by windows 8

You don't have to use Metro...at all...ever.

This very much all of this.
Get Windows 8, use it in Windows 7/desktop mode if you want (it's what I do). Pretty much everything I've used works the same or better than Windows 7. And I never have to touch the metro/modern ui.

ive bought win 8 pro recently and was wondering once this is installed on my ssd and I was wanting to RAID 0 my ssd and do a full reinstall will I be able to? with win 8 pro upgrade disc

No it's not "absolutely rubbish" and why would I blame my hardware when it works perfectly in Windows 7?

The desktop is useable, I did not say it wasnt, but it's still thinking (check hard disk light) and just watch your PC when it next shuts down. Screen off, followed by PC a little while after. Also Windows 8 does not have Aero, check how fast Win7 is with Aero off. Finally with applications being proved to run slower in Windows 8 (not noticeably I admit) I find it hard to see what all the fuss is about. I don't mind the Start Screen but overall I find it hard to recommend to anybody else, unless they specifically want the Start Screen interface.

Also, despite my issues with it on my laptop (which are stopping me from installing it on my PC) I would recommend someone building a new PC to go with Win8.

On an old Laptop W8 seems faster than W7 even with everything reduced to the minimum on the W7. Thats in 2GB of RAM. I think theres more of the OS multi threaded in W8. I'm open to correction on that though.

Could be many reasons why, did you update your firmware on your SSD and what SSD do you have?..I updated the firmware on my Crucial M4 on Win8(was working fine before however),driver wise not had any issues with three Win7 PCs upgraded to Win8,as to gaming again not had one issue yet (I have thrown a lot of games at it from oldies like Baldurs Gate up to beta version of Firefall etc) and games are just as fast or faster then they were on Win7.

I would do more problem solving if I was you,did you try a clean install of Win8?.... it can be done.
Aero is not really an issue just eye candy, can get Win8 looking good without it besides its a battery drain on portable gear like laptops/tablets etc...we have managed without it all the way from from Dos to XP and only two OSs have it ie Vista and Win7.

I will say again Win7 was not a big improvemnt over Vista apart from performance improvements and offered nothing really new(not surprising since Win7 is based on Vista),Win8 however does offer a lot more over 7 etc...

I've seen one guy posted in this forum blame Win8 for a certain game not working right(he said it was fine on Win7),guess what?.. it was his overclocked video card(overclocks can vary between different operating systems) which he relized later,my point is its easy to blame Win8 when you don't know the cause.

If I was buying a new Windows OS I'd definitely get Win8 Upgrade unless I knew there were some compatibility issues with software that was important to me. Two main advantages as I see it:

1) Very Cheap (£25 upgrade)
2) Professional Edition (much higher RAM limit than Win7 HP which bearing in mind RAM prices is quite low at 16GB - may not seem low today but how about in 2 years time?)

Buy now before the upgrade offer runs out. I can't believe how cheap it is compared to older versions of Windows, and I was happy to pay £49.99 for Win7HP Preorder.
