Wedding - Band or DJ?

Me and the future missus are starting to plan our wedding. One of the first things we need to do is decide on a reception venue.

We've looked at several over the last couple of months, and our favourite so far is the local cathedral. However, one potential sticking point; Im not sure of the exact reason, but you're not allowed a live band. Dj/disco type setup is fine, but no live band.

We don't have our heart set on a live band - we certainly haven't started at looking at who we'd like or even what type of music, but I think we would have preferred it. Doing a search on here the general consesus is also band > DJ.

However, would that be enough to put you off a venue entirely? We've only ever been to one wedding so don't really have much personal experience. We've obviously got plenty more venues to look at and might find a nicer one which doesn't have such restrictions so it might be a non issue, just trying to gauge people's opinions.

I've played in wedding bands and I would go for a top class DJ who will play exactly what you tell him/her to play and what lights to use eg do not use strobes.
I've been in bands with a lot of different songs to choose from different genres but it is never enough.

we plan to have dj to start then a band on for an hour ish then disco till end of night.

we both want some live music tho, if you dont then just get a good dj.

my sister had some big speakers they rented from a DJ shop and a spotify playlist on a laptop, it was excellent, and this was by no means a budget wedding the whole thing cost £10k

It depends on the age group of the invitees. I DJ'd for a 60th birthday in a village hall full of 60-somethings. So I wasn't allowed to play anything like Altern8, Shamen or Prodigy :p

mpledge52, you have used a semicolon in your post; my first thought would be that you are of the sophistication and class to have a band.

I gigged at 3 weddings last year in my bands but they were all Biker weddings and we just did a 1 hour rock spot.
The rest of the night was filled with a Rock DJ who did wander into other genres.
It may sound very odd recommending a disco from a working live musician but I believe everything has its time and place.

A band is classier and gives a nicer atmosphere. you also get nicer photos with a band in the BG as opposed to a DJ with disco lights in every other picture.

A recent wedding I covered the B&G hired a Sax player off the street for the mingling session after the ceremony, she was brilliant in fact and improved the atmosphere of the room somewhat.

Save the DJ for the after events :p

Get a DJ who can do a good Progressive House set and get MONGED with your family and friends, that would be amazing.

My question wasn't so much band vs DJ (although that's exctly what I've put in the title...), it's more along the lines of if you couldn't have the one you wanted, would that put you off the venue entirely?

Could you not have the ceremony at the local Cathedral and the reception at another venue?

(am assuming here that the Cathedral has been picked primarily as a nice venue for the ceremony?)

Absolutely definitely a good band!

Any band worth their salt knows enough party/dancey tracks to last the 2h set (inc breaks) they normally cover, then either a playlist or DJ to fill the gaps/go on afterwards.

We had these guys:

and they were cracking!
