*Ha! Sorry - obviously I meant rooting in the title

Hi All,

I'm wondering if someone could be incredibly kind and walk me through my first root?

I have a Galaxy S3 (GT-I9300) from Vodafone currently not rooted and running the latest update 4.1.2.

Ideally I would like to keep the ROM that I have. All I want to do is to be able to install apps that require root - Titanium backup etc.

I have been looking at this tutorial:

http://droidviews.com/2012/root-samsung-galaxy-s3-on-android-4-1-2-jelly-bean-firmware/

Does that look like a good tutorial to follow?

It looks simple enough but I can't find out whether the process will wipe my device or whether it should all stay as it is but with root access.

Has anyone done this before? Any help would be fantastic.

Wow thanks very much - so I don't have to do anything using odin etc? I just install that app on my phone?

EDIT: Sorry - reading though the thread I didn't really need to ask that question. I'll have a go now. Thanks for the pointer!

Locke - you are an absolute king! :D

Thank you very much. That was very kind. Easiest thing ever.

Can't believe that this isn't the first thing that comes up when you search for rooting.

I've had exactly the same phone, on same network, for a couple of days and was thinking of CF-Auto-Root until I saw this thread...one question eddyc; has it affected your camera as CF warns it might? That's the only thing stopping me doing it really.

Yes it did affect my camera. But what wasn't made totally clear on the thread is that it is only the security patch which might affect the camera.

The apk does two things:

1. Use vulnerability to root device
2. Patch the vulnerability to stop malicious apps gaining root access without permission

These two can be toggled individually. It is only number 2 which affects the camera. At the moment I have toggled number 1 to On and kept 2 as Off so that my camera is fine.

I've not looked at the possible camera fixes yet but at least I have rooted my device and it isn't any less secure than it was. I have just failed to improve security!

Hope that helps.

No worries, I've used it on a few Galaxy S III's and has worked fine.

It's as eddyc has explained. Personally I've left the security fix disabled on them because it affects millions of phones and you shouldn't be installing shady apps anyway.

Thanks, I read some more and went for it and your reply above is exactly what I would have written, yes it affects my camera but I just turned the patch off (no different to running stock anyway).

My device status is still 'Normal' but I'd rather keep root for now and not do the latest update..although ruling out the possibility of the 'Sudden Death' issue is tempting. Oh the choices.

Just update using Odin, it's very easy to do and is far less likely to cause problems than that horrible program called Kies :p.

After you've flashed a non-exploitable ROM via Odin you'll know how to reroot using CF Auto Root (which is also easy) :).

Sounds good. Is there a tutorial anywhere you could recommend? I get completely lost trying to wade through the xda forums.

This fails for me on my S3.

"FAILURE: Could not root device"

Anyone any ideas?
