Hi there,

I went to take my car out today on a drive, and on the way back the speedo and odometer stopped working suddenly.

The car is a Nissan 100nx, I done a quick google and couldn't find anything.

There isn't a manual for this car either, only for the Sunny, which this car is based on.

Any ideas on what to check/how to check? Assuming it's pretty standard amongst the older cars?

Cheers,

There will be a sender at the gearbox, your problem is fairly likely to be either there or in the remainder of that loom up to the back of the instrument binnacle. With the car being older it could well be just a wiring fault. Surely there's a 100nx owners club you could have a look round for similar faults?

Couldn't see anything.

I will live with an app for now, if I can find a good one for Android, otherwise I'll use my Tom Tom. Next time I have a day off I will look further into it! :)

Spec me: An Android app which tells me my speed!

The NX is just a sunny isn't it? That might help you find some more information. Unfortunately other than "it's broke" I don't know how to tell you to check the speedo sender on a car without its own ecu reporting, some basic multimeter checks might shed light on it pretty quickly though.

If that's what the problem is it'll be cheap to fix, be as well to check and sort it

Yup, a Sunny in drag!

Access looks a little dodgy, so will need to jack it up, and whilst it is in the air I may as well change a few little bits which need doing at the same time. I suppose I could start the diagnostics at the cluster though :)

Broken or damaged cable, or little cog that connects to the gearbox has come off I'd guess.

You didn't press the mileage reset button while moving by any chance did you?

I had this problem with my Omega MV6.
The problems I got was the power steering went very heavy. My speedo stopped working and the ABS light would come on intermittently.

It turned out to be my ABS ECU was failing till it finally died altogether.

I know nowt about Nissans but may be worth getting checked out ?

GA16 in mine, the box looks the same. Access is a nightmare to that part of the gearbox without jacking it up! :(

I will check it out tomorrow when I wake up though!

It's an electrical sender. No cable at the back of the instrument cluster. Time to crack out the multimeter :(

Will I be getting some kind of voltage when at idle? I am hoping so :p

Love to help with your speedo problem but my Nissan's are different to yours.

But for an app you could give DigiHUD a try? The only permission it requires is for GPS updates so no internet access etc.

(Hope there's no problem suggesting my own app?!)

Would your speedo being broken get you out of any speeding tickets?

"Sorry officer, was just on the way to the garage to get this fixed - I had no way of knowing how fast I was travelling.."

:D

At idle you should be yeah, I know it sounds daft but I'm not overly clued up on the 100nx, You have checked all the fuses etc haven't you? other than that it's likely to be sensor fault.

I've checked the fuses, however I couldn't find one directly related to the speedo  .

To top things off, driving down the road earlier, hit a pothole due to the way some selfish git had parked I couldn't avoid it! exhaust snapped at a back box joint, mid section. Going to try and claim the cost of taxi's to and from work and the cost of the mid section! Fun times. They'll probably say no, but I have reported these potholes already! Size of a moon crater! :p
