New tablet, iPad vs N10 vs Note vs TPT2

In my view, the answer to this question is a resounding no.

I wouldn't say a resounding no. Some people genuinely prefer android for those uses, I mean this is pretty simple usage and something android can do just fine. Facebook app is pretty good on android tablets and there's a few good Twitter clients with tablet support, Evernote is very nice on Android tablets too.

Ipad pros are the games and battery. Nexus 10 pros are price and the masses of extra things Android can do.

Personal preference basically OP.

I have a Nexus 10 and a iPad 4, there is nothing the iPad does better than the Nexus to be honest and I prefer the Nexus for general every day use - its just more interesting to use. Jellybean 4.2 is fantastic and ios is just the same old plain ios ! The screen ratio is a lot nicer on the nexus too.
As for apps Android certainly isn't lacking at all.

At the end of the day, they are both fantastic devices but the Nexus 10 16gb @ £319 vs an iPad 16gb @ £399 is a no brainer

Yep, and as we've identified it comes down entirely to what you're going to be using it for.

As what I'd call a 'sofa surfing' device, similar to what the OP has described, you can't go wrong with the iPad, which is why I recommended it.

If you want more advanced stuff then you are probably better off going Android, but he said:

But the android units do the same as the ipad (gaming, browsing, notes, social media) and so much more (proper interdevice connectivity, better media handling, proper multitasking, you can even use the 10.1 to control your tv & av kit via ir!) and they cost less.

Why would you hamper your capabilities by choosing a less able device?

I understand that when the ipad first showed up it changed how tablet computers were seen, but in the last year or so apple have been overtaken by other manufacturers. There are better devices out there but apple have had a few years of tablet = ipad consumer training to cover for them.

Browsing is way better on Android, controlling the viewport and ability to use stylish extension are great, also still able to use flash... Not sure how much longer that will last though.

You are, as people on this forum often do, thinking that features and things it can do = better. That's partly true, but for example, I don't want my tablet to do those things, I just want high quality apps and a good web browsing experience. I've no doubt the Android tablets can provide the latter, but they are lagging behind on the former. Reeling off a list of things I'd never use is entirely pointless.

This isn't a discussion (or shouldn't be) about what is better, just what our thoughts are about what tablet would do the job best for the OP's needs, and I think it's the iPad. If you and others disagree, that's fine.

I gave up a long time ago on arguing what's better, certain people on either side of the fence will never change their tune. They are all great devices so I'm finished with that, however I will still give my opinion, and in my opinion for the OP's uses, the iPad would be the best bet.

ha, typical apple apologist! :p

TBH I've never had to pay for an app (everything is either free or came bundled on the device, so far anyway), but I've not seen any "poor" software so far. Buying music and the like seems to be cheaper on android too.

It boils down to the OP getting the best bang per buck device, surely that would be a unit that does more but costs less?

Sigh.

Again, that's subjective. It may do more (if he'd ever use those things) at the cost of an inferior app store, meaning it actually does less. Depending on how you look at it.

Anyway, I'm sure you get the picture (if not, nevermind).

But for the OPs specific uses the android tablets don't really do less in terms of apps. :/

How can you possibly know that? He listed a couple of apps and then said 'etc'. I took this to mean apps and not things like IR control...

He'd also listed games, and the iPad is well on top there as well. More so than anything else.

Ipad is superior graphically in terms of spec, however there aren't too many games that push it enough to actually use it's juice. Plenty of fun games on android too.

I'm not talking about graphical power. I know there are plenty of games on Android as well, but when it comes to tablet optimised ones, there's quite a sizeable gap. Unless that changed in the last few weeks; I doubt it has though.

Thanks for the replies guys :)

Is there a big difference in gaming on the iPad? I assumed phone games would work fine on the N10 as they mostly have screen size independent interfaces? Not a massive app user, will check out the web stores and see whats available for each platform before making a decision.

Assuming the apps I want are on Android, and bearing in mind I probably won't be using Android's advanced features, does it basically come down to personal preference?

In playing the actual games, there's probably not much difference, it's more about the selection/quality. I'm not sure how the interfaces will filter through, again, it will probably vary. If it hasn't been tablet optimised it will be fairly rubbish I imagine.

More or less!

I'm not sure what makes you think this, most games scale up perfectly fine to full screen. It's not the same as in apps where you get a stretched interface.

I'll admit I've only used a handful of apps on phone and tablet but the ones I've used scale up instead of zooming, (eg skynews app will show 12 stories instead of 4 for example)

Most apps will use the vertical space pretty much fine on a tablet as they are mainly lists, it just extends the amount of entries on any list to fill up the screen space.

Its the width space where there is a problem on some Android apps that haven't been tablet optimized, apps are simply stretched to the width of the tablet instead of utilizing the extra space, here's an example for you.

The problem is getting much better rapidly though since the release of the Nexus7. Tablet apps on android are getting increasingly well made lately and the complaints are becoming less valid.

The iPad is the clear choice here, 3rd or 4th gen are both fine.

If I couldn't get the iPad I'd probably get a Nexus 10, but it's a very distant second choice.

For your uses, nothing beats the iPad.

I just got a ipad 3rd get 64gb today and as some of u may know im a massive android fanboy and so far loving the ipad
