Just how safe is london to visit ?

This, regarding safety.

As for things to do, it depends on cost.

The Shard is opening in February (or March), no idea what that's like, but isn't cheap - I'm also not sure how easy it is getting tickets.
Madam Tussauds - Not cheap, but could be interesting
The Planetarium - If she likes space she'll love this.
Museum Wise, I'd say British or Science are the best, unless she particularly likes Dinosaurs, at which point the Natural History would be the one of choice - it might be worth seeing what each has got at the time you go, and base it on what she likes to be fair, as my views a more male perspective.
It might be nice to have a picnic in Hyde Park, if you're going for something nice.
Nothing is a real pain to get to if you use the Tube, and she should be fine on it. In fact, teaching her how to use the Tube may be a solid life skill.
More recently, the Cable Car over the Thames might be quite cool. I've heard from a few people it is quite good, although that's weather dependent. So if it's a bad day you won't be able to do it.
The other thing I really want to do is 'Up the O2' but I think she might be too young.
London Zoo - although frankly Colchester is better.

The London Planetarium has closed down now (the one that is in the same building as Madam Tussauds. It is now a 4D Marvel interactive ride thing.

I thin you get free entry to it if you book an online ticket to see the waxworks.

I've lived in or near London all my life and have spent all my working life working in Central London. It's very safe and I bring my kids up here often.

I always had some qualms about visiting London for a day, just wandering about with a camera and taking pictures, but in the center, not a problem, wandered around the City, St. James park, Charing cross, Trafalgar Sq and along the Thames and never had a problem tbh apart from people walking into you and occasionally bashing camera and lens on my hip lol

There is a Planetarium at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, which is a little bit out of the way, but very cool all the same. Im not sure how long the Planetarium has been there.

3-4 hour walkabout:
- You start at Marble Arch, emerge from the station, walk through the arch straight into Hyde Park
- keep walking towards Hyde Park Corner, see the Arches in the middle,
- with your back to Hyde Park, go left-ish - walk through Green Park towards Buckingham Palace, see the queen,
- walk through St.James' Park towards Parliament Square, see Elisabeth Tower with Big Ben,
- take a stroll up Whitehall towards Trafalgar Square, see 10 Downing Street and Horse Guard Parade on your way,
- arrive at Trafalgar Square, wave to Nelson, take few snaps of National Gallery.
- From Trafalgar, with your back to Parliament, go right, into Strand. Keep walking, marvelling at hotels, theatres, musicals and plays until you see The Coal Hole pub on right hand side,
- across the street there will be small pedestrian path (Southampton Street), take that path and you'll end up in Covent Garden, check the pavillons, jugglers and opera singers,
- walk up to Covent Garden tube station and turn left into Long Acre. In approx 500 yards you'll reach Leicester Square, see the cinemas, caffe's,
- then as soon as you reach Swiss Center Clock (between Angus Steak House and glass house, clock on the pavement with Swiss flag on it), turn right and walk up to Chinatown,
- walk through Chinatown and by the second gate turn left and emerge on Shaftsbury Avenue.
- Turn left and follow musicals and theatre banners down Shaftsbury Avenue all the way to Picadilly Circus. Take few snaps, and now it's up to you.
You can walk through red district in Soho to Oxford Street and take a tube home from Tottenham Court Rd., or you can go up Regent Street (Disney's & Hamleys on way) to Oxford Circus.

That's quite a nice tour actually mate :)
I'd make a bee line for the bridge by Embankment Tube for nice river snaps.

Also, I'd say that may be a bit testing for a small child.

Millions gets murdered every day in London.

More seriously, being a tourist in London is expensive.

Thanks for all the guide's peep's :)

And to those who have been stabbed, raped, pick pocketed, run over,kidnapped,shot....unlucky ! gues you were in the wrong place at the wrong time :p

Natural History Museum. It is the most awesome museum in London. If anyone begs to differ, they can go to the science museum just around the corner.

Also that area of London is particularly dangerous so knife up!
