Motherboard Failure? Would you Agree?

My pc was working fine, no issues what so ever, I can't tell you exactly what happend at the time of the failure as I was using via remote desktop so I just lost connection.

When I got home the PC was off and the power button did nothing. Tried all the usual things, battery out, GPU out, all SATA out, RAM out & in different slots and finally a new power supply. Nothing makes a difference. The green light on the MB stays on at all times but nothing else.

The only thing that seems to make it switch on is removing the 8 pin CPU 12v. Then I get fans and HDD spinning up but nothing on screen as there is no CPU power.

I have sent a RMA request for the board, just waiting for a response. Its a Asus P8P67 PRO Rev 3.0.

Would everyone agree that this appears to be a Motherboard issue?

Cheers

you need the 8 pin connected, thats for the cpu

does cpu fan spin with 8pin and 24 pin plugs plugged in?

try leaving battery out for a good 30minutes

I know the 8 pin is for the CPU and it needs to be in, I was just explaining that when it is unplugged is the only time the system shows any sign of life.

Nothing happens when 8 pin and 24 pin are plugged in. The battery has been left out overnight too.

yh i understand

it could be either the board or the cpu,its rare cpu's fail so i would rma the board first and take it from there

another thing to try if you can is test with another psu just to rule it out, could be that also, whether its a top brand or not they can still randomly fail

try and go back to basics, disconnect the hdd's and gpu

and use just one stick of memory and onboard igpu(if you have that option),that way youll know no other components are preventing the mb from powering up,which can happen if ones failed somewehere

No worries, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything silly. I know it could be the CPU but like you said it's a much rarer thing to fail. The MB is the 1st obvious choice. In my case it was the 2nd choice but I am just glad I was able to get a refund on the power supply I bought thinking that was that was the 1st obvious choice. If that makes any sense! lol

yh seems strange for it to fail like that though, its usually the way

cant be memory either it would still boot up but with less memory in windows

Yeah its all very strange, I'm annoyed I didn't see exactly what happened as I said I was running via remote desktop from work when it died.

Well the board has gone back now under RMA. Waiting to find out their findings. Hopefully they will confirm the failure. If not surly it can only be the CPU?
