What is a cheap running family estate for £4-5k?

I'm sure there is a default reply, but I do not know hence why I'm asking!

What is a good cheap running car? It's going to be carrying a fair few people, regularly and the only requirement is that it's cost is low.

Any specific recommendations?

Budget could go up if it meant a significantly better purchase (max around £6-7k, as long as there was significant reasons for doing so).

Car will be used daily (30-40 miles minimum with fairly regular excursions of 100-150 miles).

Spend £3kish and get a 1 or 2 owner petrol mk3. The diesels are a false economy as they have the potential for larger bills than the petrols.

You can get a large horrible french car for peanuts, but the Ford is much better.

You need to decide a firm budget as £6-7k will get a top spec Mk4 Mondeo Titanium X Estate.

If you want to spend less then £3k would likely get you a tidy Mk3 Mondeo facelift Titanium X/Ghia X Estate. You can spend more but seems a bit mad on an old Mondeo.

personally i would go for a Mercedes w124 300te but those can be had for about half your budget.
