hey guys,

ive noticed people getting 120hz monitors for gaming and saying they will never go back, is it really that good that you wont go back?

ive been looking at the 27" 144hz monitor from asus and really have got a soft spot for it, but do you need more GPU grunt for these monitors? or can you have them running like any other monitor as say 40-60FPS?

if you do need more GPU grunt i will sell my 6990 and go 7950CF

what are your guys thoughts?

some of you may of seen that i was planning on watercooling my rig... BUT i have changed some fans around and now im happy to keep it air cooled and due to be expecting my first child in April i cant really afford to do little upgrades here and there and have the one chance to throw a load o cash at my PC, i use my PC for gaming, so i will be getting:

27" 144hz asus monitor

2x MSI hd 7950 twin frozr iii

2TB hdd

256gb samsung SSD

cheers guys

I've not long bought a BenQ 144hz monitor, and I have to say for games like bf3 it's awesome. It's a lot better than the 60hz monitors I've used in the past, i'v enoticed the biggest improvement while sniping.
I wouldn't go back to 60hz to be honest, 144hz is just so smooth.

Oh and I run a 3770k with a single 7950, both at stock for now. Easily get 120 fps, just don't have the graphics set to ultra, still looks very beautiful though.

What settings are you on then....... Medium???

I think the whole point of 120hz is that they refresh upto120fps, rather than the standard 60fps of 60hz screens. so you'll only ever notice the difference at 60fps+ which will obviously need more gpu grunt, specially if you want to run high settings on games. You should get a decent performance with a single 7950, but running games like bf3 on ultra will probably need cf to get the best result.

Nope.

Actually the difference of 120 Hz screens is felt at all FPS readings. e.g. 60 FPS on 60 Hz will feel less smooth than 60 FPS on a 120 Hz.

The improvement in smoothness is actually down to the panel itself rather than the number of frames being rendered. Obviously rendering more than 60 frames per sec is going to feel smoother but the biggest benefit of 120 Hz is the panel itself.

worth the money then,

and i just have to have all eyecandy, so CF will be what im going for

btw, has anyone got the MSI 7950 twin frozr iii?

I don't use the presets, mine are custom, some high and some low. I don't use msaa though which is one of the biggest fps hogs. I prefer good fps over eye candy, make the most of the 144 hz refresh rate.
If u want ultra then u will need cf or sli I'd say.

Its the best upgrade I've made apart from SSD. you'll wonder how you ever killed anyone using a standard monitor.

Get it set up, have a quick blast on any FPS and watch your kill counter hit the roof!
I use a single 670 and I get about 90-100+ fps in BF3 ultra though im going SLI to future proof.

too right!!!!! my kills on cs go and moh warfighter have definately improved :D
my monitor does 144hz but i prefer 120hz

im getting excited already haha!

144hz asus monitor it is!

with a couple of 7950's a SSD and a HDD :)

i just really like MSI's stuff, i have a MSI board aswell and a friend of mine has a twin frozr card and tbh not only are they good in performance, they look sweet too

I used to think I needed BF3 on high/ultra, but then who spends the entire game looking at the scenery? I run custom settings (mostly high) on a 580gtx now to keep my framerate higher for 144hz monitor, rarely dips below 80. Thinking of treating myself to a new gpu when the 780gtx is released.
