New car time (£8k)

Hi all,

I rarely venture in here these days - on the last occasion, I got a Mondeo :D

I still have said Mondeo (04 reg 1.8 LX), and my partner has a Seat Ibiza (Y reg).

After living together for some time, we've realised that on the grand total of one occasion we were both out using our cars at the same time. So now we're going to go down to one car. We've just lost our second parking space too - that helped us make a decision :D

Anyway, we can comfortably afford to borrow around £8k. We've already looked at the finance and have a great deal through our joint bank account. There are certain requirements, of course:

  • Not as big as a Mondeo
  • Not as small as an Ibiza
  • Manual
  • Petrol
  • 5 doors
  • Good fuel usage
  • Reliable and fairly cheap to run
  • Mid-sized engine (enough to overtake on a motorway)
  • Decent spec, audio AUX, aircon, nice interior, central locking, electric windows, etc

We'd like to keep it as close to £8k as possible. We can't imagine getting a great deal on trade-ins in any case. Any extra might go towards a new DSLR....but is more likely to go on a holiday :D

Thanks for any suggestions/links.

I'd suggest something like a Volkswagen Jetta at this budget. It's a Golf with a boot, but as a result it's less popular despite being the same car. Infact generally the Jetta tends to be of a higher specification than the Golf. You'll therefore get a newer, lower mileage and better equipped version for your £8k than you would with something like a Golf.

Something like that. A low mileage, 2009 Golf for just £7.5k because it has a boot not a hatch.

Are you borrowing the entire £8000? That isn't particularly sensible, IMHO.

Your budget is 8k on finance despite what you get for your Mondeo and Ibiza?

Focus ST if insurance isn't a problem?

Not this again. Seriously? We went through this last time. He's a normal guy posting a normal spec me thread coming from a collection of normal cars looking to buy one normal car. Absolutely nothing in his post suggests that what he really needs is a 2.5 litre Turbocharged Ford Focus hot hatch that does 20mpg and takes £100+ a corner tyres.

Why does this always happen on OcUK?

When replying to a 'spec me' thread take into account the personal circumstances and requirements of the OP don't just blindly post whatever you'd buy for the money as it helps nobody.

Not everyone wants a performance car!

That description and budget has Focus written all over it IMO.

You'll get a decent 59/10ish reg Zetec with low mileage for that budget.

Could you elaborate on this, please?

These points are spot-on. Thank you.

After seeing the responses, perhaps my OP is a little vague. I have decided to redo it a little - and perhaps make it a bit clearer.

I had not even given a Jetta a thought. I'll take a look at what's local.

This was my first thought. I had a 57 reg Focus before and it was a lovely car. She doesn't like the styling, but I'm going to get her a test drive in one. I guess I like Fords :)

Sure - it puts you in negative equity immediatly if you finance 100% of the car. You instantly owe more than the value of the car. This means you cannot easily get rid of the car if your circumstances change. Even selling it leaves you with an outstanding debt.

Yeah, didn't think to add a size disclaimer. How much bigger is it than a Jetta though? Can't be much more that 6 inches in it?

Why? Because you have a Yaris presumably? :p

No, but answer me. Does it, does it not fit his criteria? :p

On paper, it is even more economical than yours :D with a touch more power for those motorway overtaking he wants to do lol

And if I am being reallllllly pedantic, the Auris is a 5 door, where as the Jetta is a 4 door with a boot :p

It's just not really that good a car, can't see why you'd buy one given the competition?

I've never driven or been in either so I can't say which is better, handling or otherwise but just giving the OP options (basing on numbers on paper). :)
