On the side job from your own profession

I help my parents and sister out for free, rest of family have to pay me (albeit not a lot, like £10 + expenses) friends have to pay me a bit more (more like £10-20 + beer depending on how much work is involved), anyone's "friend of a friend" or "family member of a friend" i tell them the real charges....The last person unrelated or non-friend who asked me to do something i told it'd cost them £35 per hour, half of what the local IT consultancy company charge for their services. Didn't hear from them again.

IT support is the one outside of work profession where any tom dick or harry will happily ask you to do something for pittance, whereas ask a friend who's a sparky or a plumber for that sort of help and they'll give you a damn quote just with a bit of a mates rate which in the grand scheme ends up as sod all!

Not that I'm bitter about the way people see us :)

Bingo! heh I do indeed :) Chelmsford Support desk, so we just get drip fed the info on the changes... some we really dont like due to the hassle is then causes us :( lol

Interesting, do you know when the latest version of SOLUS with all the fancy SIMs deployment features is being released? I asked the CAPITA in Gloucester that back around September time and they couldn't tell me anything concrete. Luckily i don't actually have to use SIMs as we have other people doing all that, though we do have to install it all and manage the various programs that link into it or pull stuff from it.

You and your fellow employees are hated amongst kids and staff in our school alike as-well as across our county lol due to one word, OPENHIVE.

SOLUS 3.5... I don't honestly think even the development team do. We got shed loads of info on it, just no release date. Our service desk manager doesn't know, our tech team don't know, we stand no chance on 1st Tier heh :) But it is meant to make SOLUS 3 deployments a lot 'nicer' and easier, only time will tell on that one :)

LOL! Norfolk use that too. Fortunately, we don't get involved with the OPENHIVE system for them. We don't directly deal with much hosted platform issues, other than escalating cases to the hosted team :)

One time this year, just after we had switched over, they decided to change our filtering list from a black to white list. So the Kids and Staff could get on Porn, terrorist websites that kind of thing, but not onto BBC bitesize! Took half a day to realize what the Muppet had down and luckily we could change it back ourselves.

Anyway sorry OP for going Off-topic!

Work in a data centre but do the odd PC here and there for local peep's, wasnt so bad before when I had a different job but this one seems to take up all the hours.

When I am short on money though its nice to have a couple of laptops to fix for some money

You might wanna check your employment contract. I believe I have limitations on what I can do outside of office hours in terms of paid work. I'm not suggesting you care but would be helpful to know if you need to keep your mouth shut during office hours.

Since the age of 12 I have always played in bands and still do it now - and yes I do pay tax after I got caught in the 90s and had to pay a lot back.
I also fix computers but normally on a *** for tat basis - in other words my gas problems are always fixed, electric problems and so on.
